Cullen, Julian, Donnelly and Sims monkeywrench Mulcair’s well-laid plans

Ouch. Four NDP MPs voting with their feet – with more to come, I hear.

Not exactly a vote of confidence in Angry Tom’s leadership.

    Warren,

You know what they say about red tide — and in this case, a Trudeau red tide may be toxic to many an NDP MP especially if Justin takes off in Ontario first. To me, this is more about Trudeau than Mulcair. I doubt even a Jack led party could have resisted a Justin surge should it materialize just before or during the next campaign.

Wow, Cullen’s and faction walking would be a monumental loss to the party. That said, I’m not really surprised.

NDP related, but a tad bit OT…

Why is this apparently no big deal…

But Duffy taking a personal loan from Wright is???

Begs into question…yet again…a double standard relative to left/right politics, does it not???

  4. WDM says:

It’s a long shot, but a night of by-elections in any or all of those ridings on the same night as the eventual one in Trinity-Spadina could turn Mulcair’s beard grey.

I supported Cullen, home boy and his environment stands, in the fed leadership. I like him quite a bit; he has done a good job since in the House. Classy politician!
It has crossed my mind, though , of Jinny across the aisle from Clark…Jinny’s intelligence and passion against Clark’s media persona.

They should be careful, though, there are some provincial ND’s who will make a good run at this leadership. Always good idea to make sure you have the next job before you leave the present one!

    • Kirk Pedersen says:

Jinny Sims would be the exact opposite of what the BC NDP needs. Another leader who has spent her entire career in organized labour before getting into politics. There’s very little differentiating her from Adrian Dix in that regard. Cullen would make a lot more sense but it’s a pretty steep pay cut.

Love to see Nathan Cullen as the new BC NDP leader….I like the cut of the mans jib, esp him standing up against the Enbridge/Harper Northern Gateway Pipeline cabal…a loss in salary for him if he becomes leader, to be sure…..but not having to fly to and from Ottawa?……priceless……

  7. Warren's Best Friend says:

This is CLASSIC Kinsella spin. Four MPs are considering a run for the *leadership* of the government-in-waiting of Canada’s 3rd most populous province. That’s right, four ordinary MPs who want a shot at being the next premier of a large province that was the NDP’s to lose in the last election. And this is somehow an indictment of Mulcair. You spin me right round, baby, right round…

  8. MCBellecourt says:

Living in the riding next to Nathan Cullen’s, I think it would be super if he became leader of the BCNDP’s. As I mentioned in the past, he is very well-thought-of here, even by a lot of conservatives I know.

In the same token, he is a very sane and thoughtful presence in the House. If there would be a loss to be felt should he leave, it will be a loss to the entire House, not just the NDP. His is a maturity that is, at the same time, ageless–and, no matter how many years you put into politics, it takes a whole lot of something else to achieve that. Being only 41, he will be one to watch for the next couple of decades–and he’ll do Canada proud, whatever he decides to do.

  9. bza says:

Note that they are all ‘considering’ runs. Last time around both Cullen and Julian ‘considered’ runs and then took a pass.

In the end, probably just one of out of the four of them or none will likely run.

I wouldn’t consider it a slight on Mulcair’s leadership. It seems to be more about the need to have someone with no connection to the 90’s NDP government, since it seemed to be one of the things that sunk Dix. Among many.

It may be exactly what the BC NDP is looking for, with Horgan or Farnworth being the other two options, and it may not be enough assurance for members that they have what it takes to win next time.

  10. JohnA says:

Just look at the numbers – NPD = 60…. NDP = 44. Looks like the old NDP is a tail on the Quebec NPD filled with separatists!

Come the 2015 election, the NDP will fail in the ROC, the NPD will crater in Quebec because the BQ will make a nationalistic comeback based on PQ Marois’ Quebec Charter of Values. Just watch!

Trudeau’s Liberals will make spectacular gains in the ROC as the soft lefty liberal vote abandons the questionable NDP and comes back to the Liberal fold. Believe it!

However, Harper will still get a majority in 2015 based on many of the 30 new ridings going Conservative. (PM Trudeau 2019-20?).

    • Elizabeth says:

If it takes that long for Harper to leave, I’m going to ignore politics, except for voting. I can’t stand it any longer. Hobbit-hole here I come.
