    Who is “Andrew Tumilty”?

  2. Ian Howard says:

It strikes me that if we see Rob Ford as suffering from one or possibly several mental illnesses this really isn’t very funny.
It shouldn’t matter who we are talking about mental illness can’t be understood in the context of snide tweets.

    • Warren says:

      Who said he’s mentally ill?

      I just think he’s a disaster.

      • Ian Howard says:

He is a disaster but it is highly likely addiction plays a major role in his excess. Ridicule his ideas all you like but piling on the train wreck that is his life achieves nothing. If we are ever to come to grips with addiction and related mental illness I suggest we stop laughing and show some compassion .
I just don’t understand why the tragedy that is his personal life is so funny.
I remember laughing at the antics of a friend who kept his problems hidden. They found him dead 5 days after he finally overdosed on prescription meds, it wasnt so funny then. Perhaps it is impossible to show compassion for political enemies but those around Ford have enabled his behavior those opposite should try to understand it. Public figure or not continually making fun of his relationship to crack verges on cyber bullying or do you like so many believe addiction should not be considered an illness.

        • John D. says:

Well, Ian, call it a hunch, but it’s quite possible many of us are finding it difficult to feel “compassion” for Ford because (a.) he’s a childish, crude, bullying asshole, (b.) he’s mean as a snake, (c.), he’s already done a significant amount of damage to the city with his antics…with the promise of much, much more to come if he’s allowed to continue rampaging unopposed, (d.) he sure as hell wouldn’t be inclined to show the least mercy towards a political enemy if the positions were reversed, and (e.) since his friends, family, and neandrathal voting base are apparently A-Ok with letting the fat oaf blunder on with his more self-destructive urges, it seems a tad inappropriate to expect the rest of us to step in and carry out an intervention. Why the hell should we?

        • Mary says:

We’ll show compassion when he and his supporters admit he is an addict and his life is a mess and he needs help….and vacates the mayors chair. While he and his supporters continue to deny there is any problem, it isn’t incumbent on us to show “compassion” for something he hasn’t even admitted to.

        • Ian Howard says:

They are poor because they are lazy.

There are takers and there are makers.

There but for the grace of god go I.

Which of the above cliches is true. Reducing people to one dimensional figures is really easy and we all do it. Righteous indignation has provided the excuse for so many tragic events. Perfectly reasonable to argue Rob Ford’s behavior has disqualified him from the right to be mayor. But keep attacking him on a personal level and I suspect you will do nothing more than galvanize his base. Is it too much to ask that we focus on ideas . Everyone has had their fun but isn’t it time to focus on issues.

    • patrick says:

      Is stupidity an illness?

    • MCBellecourt says:

In the past few years, I’ve seen ZERO compassion from Conservatives for the mentally ill, the sick, the addicted, and for those whose jobs went bye-bye. If you don’t show compassion for those less fortunate than you, expect none in return.

      • Ian Howard says:

No one is mentally ill because of their politics. You won’t get the reference I suspect ”

“There’s only one rule that I know of, babies—God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.”

Try God Bless you Mr. Rosewater If you want to know what the soul of a Liberal should be.

  3. GPAlta says:

This reminds me of one of my favourite quotes, which admittedly is not a tweet, but still awesome:

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged . One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

  4. Phil says:

    That’s brilliant! LOL

  5. Ryan Tumilty says:

    Hey Warren,

My brother needs absolutely no encouragement. I expect he will stop talking about this sometime in late 2024, maybe.

  6. Brent Woolnough says:

I do believe Mayor Ford is channelling Alfred Hitchcock in this photo.
