In case Stephen Harper thinks Rob Ford has changed the channel for him…

…he should think again.

My little BBQ vid, from the 2011 Ontario campaign. An oldie but a goodie.

  1. Rob says:

Ok so the pm says he’s “cleaning up the left wing mess federally.” Bugs me every time I hear that!

  2. doconnor says:

So what are the odds that both Harper and Ford will resign before Monday. Less the 50:50, I’ll grant you, but not an impossibility.

  3. Rob says:

Not likely for RF anyway. He just said he has no reason to resign but can’t say more to defend himself bc it’s before the courts. Audacious!

    The End of Conservatism

    “Every woman adores a fascist”

My roommate ran into my bedroom this morning shrieking – bleary eyed, I thought for Halloween – but no: “they have the video, they have the video!” Turns out the conservative movement has received the hugest of Halloween tricks. And so it seems, after a night of champagne and cosmopolitans, I’m back to it, trying to make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves, us Conservatives that is. It hasn’t been easy nor has it been pretty.

In spring, I watched, totally gob smacked, as Tom Flannigan stated that “he was put on the mailing list of the national Man Boy Love Association for several years” and generally try to defend that most satanic of media, child pornography. Who knew one of the architects of modern, Canadian conservatism had a special place for deviants – this is not the Family Values I signed up for. I quietly began another morning in horror reading Barbara Amiel – another elite Conservative – trying to somehow explain away gang rape as the natural outgrowth of boys will boys and intoxicated hussies deserve whatever they get. Remind me keep my daughters away from the Black’s house. Blatchford took the same line.

Now, I’m watching decent enough men go to the wall, and frankly, the slimiest SOBs remain firmly entrenched. Nigel Wright, widely remembered as a straight shooter and the smartest guy in just about every room, has been forced out under a dark cloud of shame. Sure, he’ll survive but, will he ever get the stink of Mike Duffy out of his pinstripes? Back to the “mayor,” Mark Towhey, a man who survived the infantry only to be escorted by the mayor’s security out of the building, is yet another causality of the imploding Conservative movement.

The Conservative elite appear like dirty hogs – we the rank and file, and functionaries like Wright and Towhey, I guess are learning the hard way there is no way to dance with these people without getting absolutely filthy dirty and caught up in scandal, shame, or, as the Ford Family’s troubles continue to ripen, something akin to an episode of the Sopranos or Goodfellas.

How did this come to be? The brutal truth is: the Conservative movement in Canada has been dominated by a social phenomenon similar to what has occurred in Saudi Arabia; that is, an incredible infusion of wealth into a social milieu that was stagnant at best, wildly backward at worst – hence the religious fundamentalism; the emphasis on capital, corporal, and carceral punishment; the underlying misogyny, as the above illustrates, truly Talibanesque views about women; and, the logical outgrowth, the alpha males, princelings, have carte blanche to lord it over the serfs, the environment, over the women, the kids, to indulge whatever sick and corrupt desires their tar-sands-black hearts dream up. Oh, and smoking crack cocaine with gangsters on a regular basis.

I could go back and talk about the Aberhearts or the Mannings but that’s the past – everyone knows Stephen Harper is the most powerful man in this town now. Try this: Google images/ Stephen Harper alongside JR Ewing. Weird isn’t it? It’s even better if one plays the soundtrack from the film “There Will Blood” – “I know there’s an ocean of oil just under my feet … I have a competition in me. I want no one else to succeed. I hate most people.”

For a while, especially with the money rolling in, I have to confess, it was more than fun – it was addictive – the dresses, trips to Las Vegas, the champagne and coke. But now, the thrill has gone. As for me, I can only hope the Fords and Harpers soon say, “I’m finished!” As for me, it has to be cold turkey from here on in.

“There’s a stake in your fat black heart
And the villagers never liked you.
They are dancing and stamping on you.
They always knew it was you.
Daddy, daddy, you bastard, I’m through.”

whether breaking glad or breaking sad it’s still breaking fucking bad how hard it is to bring down elected bullies who are this evil. Yeah, I said it. Evil.

  6. Steven says:

“I’ve been very clear: it was all Nigel’s doing”.

    • Matt says:

Not as interesting as some would like. To quote Kenney:

“I know Nigel Wright to be a person of good faith, of competence, with high ethical standards. And as far as I can tell, this was an uncharacteristic lapse of judgment on his part, both the decision to write a cheque and apparently the way it was handled thereafter,” said Kenney, the Conservative government’s regional minister for southern Alberta.

He doesn’t say this WOULD be a lapse in judgement, as in suggesting he doesn’t believe it.

He say this WAS a lapse in judgement, which suggests he believe’s the allegations against Wright.

Was there not a fishing trip that Steve and Ford went on? Somehow i thought I recalled a photo or two from that also.

  8. Kaplan says:

Is that Lisi in the background of the video (facing the camera in some shots)?

  9. Matt says:

It’s fun for the anti Harper people to discuss, but I’m not sure what a video of Harper at Ford’s BBQ 2 YEARS before the crack story has to do with anything.

  10. jack says:

Oh yes, here is the link. Turns out the article says that this years trip was the second in two years. Fishing buddies then. Let the games begin about what was discussed and what happened on their fishing trips:

Was their Coke or Diet Coke
    Did anyone smoke
Did the lines get messed up
    Was there any rock climbing

    oh what a tangled web………..

    • Matt says:

Again, that is about 7 months BEFORE the story of the, now police acknowleged video first broke.

      • VC says:

You sound like a real stick in the mud, but at the same time you recognize the fun in all of this in your post above. Our PM hangs out with Canada’s most notorious crack-head: that’s fucking hilarious shit (even more funny than the ‘gay cowboy’ outfit)!

  11. jack says:

The evidence against wallin, duffy and Brazeau looks pretty bad. BUt there have been no charges or due process. Harper says fire them.

The evidence against Rob Ford looks pretty bad. BUt as of yet no charges or due process. Would Harper fire him? What about same for Del Maestro.

    Just sayin.

  12. Joe Citizen says:

Didn’t Flaherty come out to Ford’s defence when the whole crack video allegations were first made saying that he’s friends with Rob and the Fords and he spoke to Rob and has no reason to believe any of it is true yada yada yada?

  13. Kev says:

I can’t wait until the inevitable mashup of the BBQ video and the crack video.

Another good call by Mr Chretien – last thing party needs are these large egos in the Senate – Duffy lobbied for years to get in the Senate , it appears he needed the money and likes the limelight – He and Glen MacGregor got into it time and again in Frank Magazine – too me why would you touch him…

I know this is all hindsight but Chretien new enough not to risk it

    • Matt says:

But he did appoint Raymond Lavigne, currently in jail for fraud, and personally recommended Mac Harb, who looks like he will be charged with fraud and breech of trust in this latest round of Senators behaving badly.

      Stuff happens. People get fooled.
