Someone has just created a site called http://justinesacco.com/ and used it as a redirect to aidforafrica.org . Brilliant.

I wonder what Mandella would say in response.

Nelson Mandela by his own admission dropped the ball on his countries AIDS strategy……not really acknowledging the problem in South Africa until his own son died of the disease. He spent the last years of his life trying to rectify his lack of effort on this file while he was President of South Africa.
What Ms. Sacco said was wrong, ignorant, and hurtful…..and I hope she is rightfully pilloried for it……but Mr. Mandela was no saint, at least initially, in the fight against HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

well you can portray the negative aspects or view the entire picture.

I have a different opinion of Mandela’s legacy than you.

I hold Mr. Mandela in the highest regard….the article was not meant as a slag against the man…esp given the extremely difficult job that was laid before him upon assuming power….but Mr. Mandela himself realized later in life that more could have been done to combat HIV/AIDS in S. Africa.

Old one liner about Europeans leaving their African empire behind: Let them debate in their little legislatures, as long as we still have the banks.

A couple of things we European/North Americans might consider as aid to Africa:

Instead of meeting the growing influence of China and India via business with military camps and military actions, we could try our using our much vaunted entrepreneurial skills and do business with Africans, as partners.

We could apologize for our allowing English and French financial interests stampeding us into destroying Libya when the regime there was on the cusp of organizing and financing an African currency to be used for African commodity trade thereby freeing African nations form dependency on Western financials…and then stay out of the way while the Africans reorganized that effort.

We could take responsibility for the behavior of Western businesses, like mining companies, fishing cartels, and ocean dump garbage disposals, and rein I their trashing of Africa’s resources and the communities there.

About 4-5 years ago I caught one of those BBCNews debate and discussion programmes. The setting was African, and the audience looked to be mostly African. At one point, an audience member from an African city stood and offered that one reason Asian business interests were making progress in his country was that they worked with Africans as partners, rather than treating them with the disdain that Europeans and North American Business people showed Africans. What struck me was that most others in the audience smiled and nodded in agreement at the fellow’s point.

I believe China’s involvement in Africa is just imperialism 2.0 Africans will eventually wake up to the fact that having thrown off one colonial yoke, they simply have exchanged it for another. Wonderful that China is helping build infrastructure in Africa…..but lets not kid ourselves….they are there for one thing and one thing only…..Africa’s resources….and a captive market for China’s trade goods……
