Irene David Cleary
My Aunt Irene passed away on the weekend, another family member felled by cancer.
Her funeral is today in Knowlton, in the Eastern Townships, and I couldn’t get there on time. My Mom is there, however.
What can I tell you about her? To me – as a kid, as now – she was what Montreal was when it was at its hippest: Expo ’67, Trudeau (the elder), Habitat, all of that. She was cosmopolitan and multilingual and lived on two continents, and I thought she was from another world, back then. She was cool.
Anyway, say a little prayer for her, if you will. She was a good one. Thanks.

Warren, my deepest sympathies and best wishes for your family. I too had such an aunt, she was a flapper in the 20s though and maintained that free spirit to the end. She always reminded me of that joie de vivre and the life of a vagabond/gypsy/independent woman. It is seldom that I am reminded of her and I don’t smile, she always used to sing “putting on the ritz” a classy woman from a time gone by.

Warren, you have my deepest sympathies. Although I never met your Aunt, I know her well. Those were the people I grew up with in Montreal. They taught me what a tolerant and just world must look like. They are what Canada was. We are less now, without her. I hope your Mum travels safely.
Sorry to read about your loss Warren. She was obviously a special lady in your life. I am familiar with Knowlton and the Eastern Townships which is a beautiful area of our country.

My mother was an incredible woman. One of the many from this family.
We will all cherish the moments we spent with her and the wonderful memories which were created in her presence. This, in itself, is a blessing.
She is now ageless, timeless and forever in our hearts. She will be missed more than words can say.

So sorry to hear about Irene’s passing. She was an amazing person, so much fun and a great friend to me when I lived in Montreal. My condolences to her family.
I hadn’t been touch in with Irene for years since moving out of province, I thought of her often and always with a smile. Her sense of style and humour was wonderful. She was always radiant and uplifting, such a loving, kind friend she will be missed
yet ever present in spirit because that what she was, all spirit. Blessings to her family she will be remembered well and often.
