Gee, I wonder if this is a Glen McGregor story?

“Paul Calandra court documents point to family dispute over money, assets.”

Has all the elements, doesn’t it? You know: (a) poking through ancient court documents (b) to find personal stuff (c) about someone Glen doesn’t like, and (d) about whom no one else gives a shit.

What is amazing isn’t the “you can take the boy out of Frank magazine, but you can’t take Frank magazine out of the boy” truism. What’s amazing is that his editors at the Citizen have zero – as in, zero – critical faculties when it comes to this guy.

Oh, and just to be clear: I think Calandra is an idiot, like everyone else. But Glen McGregor is way, way worse.

Yup. Read first par and wondered why this story needed to exist.

McGregor is a perfect example of what is causing the newspaper industry’s problems that you raised in a previous topic. The perfect example of the scandal-a-day, gotcha!, tabloid journalism that has become the norm. I notice even Maher has started to avoid having his name involved with him any more. We can get this kind of crap online free everyday. No need to buy a hardcopy or to get behind a paywall. And still the print media bosses wonder why their rags are in decline.
Could it be because their publications spend more time in the toilet, than actually analyzing and reporting legitimate news?
Too bad outhouses are mostly things of the past, there’d still be a place for the likes of McGregor and the newspapers that publish him and others like him.

I agree , what relevance does this have to anything in 2014…

In fairness, Calandra brings his family into almost every response he gives during question period.

So allegations, from a family dispute (which are always ugly to begin with) which were never proven in court are the basis of an article to smear the reputation of a politician.

Not a fan of Calandra, but he deserves better than this.

  6. PP says:

As someone who had watched some of Calandra’s outrageous responses to legitimate questions from the opposition, responses where he invoked stories about his children, family members, and his family pizza business, I actually thought that Glen’s story about the alleged personal disputes Calandra had had with his family was fair comment.

Calandra opened the door to that line of attack/comment himself when he invoked his family in his responses, nonsensical though they might have been, numerous times in Parliament.

If anything, Glen’s story further confirmed for us our impression of the kind of person we are dealing with in Calandra and again raises the question how anyone, even Harper, could make all these bad appointments repeatedly.

  7. JH says:

‘Kind of person we are dealing with’ alright and as WK points this one is pretty sleazy as are those who would support this kind of journalism.
Same guy ran a contest to ‘deflower’ a PM’s daughter. You people who would support this type of journalism are as bad as him.

    • PP says:

I did not see any contest to deflower any PM’s daughter in Glen’s article about Calandra. No one is defending him on that one here. We are talking about the present article. My point was simply that Calandra opened the door to fair comment on his family issues because of his outrageous remarks invoking his family members and business in Parliament. Please, we are better off keeping away from ad hominem attacks and stick to the issue being discussed.

some may argue Calandra opened the door when he discussed his family in the Commons. However, just because someone opens a door, doesn’t mean you have to follow through it and roll in the mud also.

While Caladra may speak about his relatives in the House of Commons, they may have no control over what he says. Why bother digging into this family/relatives lives and making things more uncomfortable for them. You can’t choose your relatives so, why take it out on Calandra’s.
