I post this for four unrelated reasons:
1. It’s relevant to current events (cf. what John Tory did to his public image yesterday).
2. Tomorrow Michael Coren is interviewing Clash drummer Terry Chimes, who (like many of us punks, Johnny Rotten included) is Catholic.
3. In the Social Blemishes (pre-Nasties), we met and jammed one afternoon with PIL’s drummer, fellow Albertan Jim Walker. True story.
4. You all needed to be educated about where U2’s The Edge stole his guitar sound (and the actual riff to ‘I Will Follow’) from.

Is PiL punk? Don’t really know – sensational track, however. Timeless. Thanks for the memories.
That’s a good question. They get called “post-punk” a lot, whatever that is. Rotten told me, in interviews, he isn’t a punk – but then insisted he invented the genre (he didn’t – Iggy did).
At the risk of starting a pissing match with you, Warren, I have to call bullshit on Iggy inventing the genre. Give a listen to a live recording of The Kinks performing “All Day and All of the Night” and tell me that’s not punk as hell.
Anyway.
Best to take this type of conversation and nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Would say that listening to the Trashmen’s “Surfing Bird” is punk and any of the 60’s garage bands. Take a listen to The Seeds, Shadows of Knight, Outsides, Rats, Standells and Saints to name a few.

Where rifts come from is open to debate. If you listen to Magazine’s – Real Life album (1977), you can say that PIL First Issue (1978) took the rift from them, who took the it from the Buzzcocks.

Everybody “steals” from everybody. And I use steal in quotes, because it can be a blatant rip off, homage or inspiration. Songs aren’t written in a bubble with no outside influences.
