Somehow I associate this group with Femen in Ukraine, Anna Hutsol and her group. Pussy Riot’s 1st iconoclastic move noticed in the West was in a major church, and I thought of the role of the Orthodox Church in Russia’s history, in part, its maintenance of a patriarchy. Femen’s target is pretty well the same, patriarchy. The two groups have a good sense of going after symbols – the church, the Olympic rings in this vid. To add to the questioning of patriarchy we have in the vid men in uniforms grabbing and hitting the women (admittedly, also in uniform).
Makes me also think too of Malala Yousafzai and of the missing and murdered women in Mexico and Canada, and gender justice everywhere.

Just a thought, does it seem odd to see so many guys with cameras standing around just watching while the guys in uniform knock around these young women?

    Warren,

The best and bravest of humanity walk the streets of Sochi. Those women give me hope.

Ukraine and Thailand are disasters. Russia is infinitely worse. And yet, what potential she had.

This score just in from Sochi:

    Pussy Riot 1 – Putin 0
