Highly scientific poll: what should Rob Ford do?

In difficult circumstances, my answer is always number five.

(In all seriousness, however, I’d love to hear your views about what you’d do if you were advising Rob Ford. Hard to imagine, I know, but he was looking for an advisor, just yesterday afternoon!)

Is this for a political avdisor or a personal advisor?

Given his history of ignoring the advice given to him both personal and professional, I’d say no to that job.

  2. Bill Templeman says:

Don’t we want Ford (either one) to stay in the race so as to split the right-wing vote?

  3. W the K - No, not Warren says:

He should do #3. He will do #1. It will all end up becoming #5.

  4. sezme says:

I’ve lost interest in what Rob Ford should or will do after he spent the last year taking absolutely no responsibility for his actions. Probably this has been a lifetime pattern with him and his whole freaking family. Why the residents of Toronto should have to stand by and watch this drama unfold in the middle of our city government is beyond me. Whatever he does or doesn’t do from this point should have little impact on the eventual outcome of our civic election. In fact it might be time to retire the line about how Olivia is the only one who can beat Rob Ford, and come up with something new, because Rob Ford has beaten himself.

All we can do now is support our candidates of choice, deny Rob Ford the political oxygen he needs, and in October, may the best woman win.

The post title says “what should Rob Ford do?”, but your poll title says “What will Rob Ford do?”.

Those two questions always have opposite answers.

    • Warren says:

      Picky, picky.

      • Adam B says:

Haha! Another problem is that Ford already is the IKEA monkey, which is to say a youtube sensation. So while I voted for that (because it is funny), it is neither what he should do, or will do, but what now he is!

I like to make Ford jokes, but I am sort of ashamed of them now. Olivia Chow and Warren are right to treat this matter very seriously, because it long ago stopped being a joke. Just unbelievably awful that a thug like this would not only be mayor, but would have attracted so much support from prominent Canadian Conservatives. Surely they must have known that Ford had serious baggage.

  6. doconnor says:

I’d advise him to do what he can to not die.

  7. Al in Cranbrook says:

#3 would be the right thing to do.

Frankly, I feel for the guy. He’s demonstrated that he’s got a pretty big heart, and wears it on his sleeve. But he’s obviously got some serious personal issues to deal with.

That said, I’ve never witnessed a pile on like he’s endured against a politician. Brutal, and some of it certainly self inflicted. But it started the day he won election as mayor, and has been unrelenting since. IMHO, the kind of stuff that makes good and competent people reconsider any notion of public service.

    FWIW

    • doconnor says:

“He’s demonstrated that he’s got a pretty big heart”

He cares about people he has a personal connection to, but it doesn’t extend to people he has never met, even if they are in the exact same situation. That’s why he helps football players that he has coached, but vote against programs that would help all youth in similar situations.

Good and competent people need not worry about going through what Rob Ford has been put through. They should look at what other good and competent politicians go through, which I admit, it still pretty intense.

his issues with substance abuse, as well as racist, homophobic, sexist, violent, reactionary tendencies, and an open hatred for many broad segments of the city’s population were known before he was first elected. If rob ford is your idea of a good and compitent person, substance abuse aside, I’d have some serious questions about yourself should you ever end up on a ballot

    • smelter rat says:

      Get a grip. Al.

      • eyeroll says:

“some of it certainly self inflicted…”

Some? Who else would you blame for his crack-smoking lying ass ways?

    • Cameron Prymak says:

      #3 then #6 with #5.

      Get help.
Resign as mayor and get help.
Resign as mayor, quit the race and get help.
Resign as mayor, quit the race and have Doug run instead.
      Ikea Monkey
      Run for Mayor of Cranbrook.

  8. Marc-Andre Chiasson says:

If Ford stays in the race and he is elected again, Toronto merits the same fate as Sodom and Gomorrah.

  9. SM says:

“Get Help” I found it interesting that his statement didn’t actually include the word “re-hab”, so “Get Help” can mean anything from don’t let your dealer hang around with his cell phone, to only drink at home where no one can make audio recordings, to take some acting classes so that people are more convinced by your lies, or file a lawsuit of some kind and play victim, or just hide at the family cottage for a month or so. All of which is to say, what I think he will do is “Get Help”.

Not going to resign. When my favourite basketball player will not resign because of money, why would you expect Ford?

Ford is going to start the publicly-funded rehab he needs, and hope to be stronger afterwards. The reality is, if he had done the rehab a month ago, without all these new, nasty revelations, I would have given him even odds to win it all. Now, with the new, nasty revelations, the story of redemption will not gain traction.

    Timing is everything.

If Ford is true to form, he will not finish rehab. He will continue to get paid to the end of his term while on sick leave and will get a severance afterwards.

I can see his brother running, but going backwards more than forward, and dropping out for some reason. It’s a 2-person race. The question is, will anyone else join in with Ford out? Not to knock on your candidate WK, but I believe that a lot of folks wish there was a third choice to Olivia and Tory.

    • doconnor says:

“Ford is going to start the publicly-funded rehab he needs”

I would expect Ford will go for private treatment. He has said in the past he likes two-tier health care.

“He will continue to get paid to the end of his term while on sick leave and will get a severance afterwards.”

Rob Ford donates his pay to charity.

      • MississaugaPeter says:

“I would expect Ford will go for private treatment.”

We shall see about that. But it would be in his best interests to get away from all his friends and go somewhere in the U.S. If he is planning to continue his mayor run, his supposed “average man” persona would have him getting publicly-funded rehab here. We shall see what he does.

“Rob Ford donates his pay to charity.”

I would like this verified before I would accept as an absolute truth.

  11. davidray says:

    riddle me this.
Donald Sterling owner of the Clippers NBA team is banned for life by the NBA for racist remarks made public which sound like a valedictorian speech compared to the bile that regularly spews from the pie hole of Mayor Crackhead who is never held accountable for anything he does or says. The NBA had to act because the players were about to go all revolt on the league ergo exit Mr Sterling the racist. So think of Toronto as a league and we as the players. Surely October is too far away. We should do everything we can to oust this suffocating vampire squid sucking the blood from the city of Toronto (thank you Matt Taibbi) now rather than continue to humiliate ourselves in the court of public opinion around the world for another six months.

  12. Reality.Bites says:

Resign. Drop out of the race. After that I really don’t care what happens to him except that I want it to happen far from Toronto

  13. Jerry says:

My guess is that who ever shot that film has some fairly susbtantial mob connections and isn’t the least bit concerned about retribution from the brothers Ford, the message has been sent, get out of the race or die, though Rob had the wiggle room to say get help or die.

  14. Steven says:

Go on an extended fishing trip with his BFF Stephen Harper.

  15. chris says:

He will do early Amanda Bynes stuff …go away, come back and campaign until september when he will set fire to Olivia’s driveway by mistake

  16. TrueNorthist says:

What truly scares me is that he could still win if he plays his cards right. I can think of several things he could do, but I would have to be insane to give anyone any bright ideas. The Fords epitomize all that is wrong with politics these days and the sooner they vanish from the stage the better. Two bit, corpulent gangsters and thieves the lot of them.
