Tonight, my Dad gets to ask Mr. Nash his question

He always wondered why they changed the theme music to The National. Tonight, I hope he gets the chance to ask him.

GOODNIGHT! He used to say that with such enthusiasm, it made me wonder if it was really time to go to bed. What a great guy, and great Canadian.

I am sad to hear that Mr. Nash has passed away. He was the news anchor I found the most easy to listen to and follow back in the day, and compared to the shallow fluff readers we have today his shoes will never be adequately filled. May your father indeed get that chance Warren, and thanks for posting the passing of a truly great Canadian journalist from back in the days when real jounalists still were able to practice their craft without being harassed as some sort of traitors for it.

He was fantastic and a real professional. Just added to much credibility and class to his newscast.

I have missed Knowlton Nash for years and thought of him often as I try to watch Peter M. I have never warmed to that Mansbridge kid, even after all these years. Mr. Nash WAS the National for me, the rest are just poor substitutes. Rest in Peace, Mr. Nash.

Yes, I was a great fan of Knowlton Nash. But the music for The National was so-so when he anchored it — see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE6_9Bn7ID0 . Later, though, the opening music became very intense and exciting. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBqYHn9GcxU

Yeah, but much better is the opening from 1984.

The ’84 opening is better than the ’78 one. But the opening from ’96 is still the best. It’s like an adrenaline rush whenever I hear it. Great stuff. Why they changed that to the tepid opening they have now I’ll never know.

      • TrueNorthist says:

I will agree that the ’84 version was the best, but I have a soft spot for the 70’s version, for no more reason than it was the first and sounds like HAL 9000 did the voice-over

Knowlton Nash’s passing makes me recall sitting in the control room observing him & the crew in action during the National. It was following up by switching over to watch The Journal with Barbara Frum.

Nash the Slash died a week earlier. Its been a bad week for the Nashes.

  8. Mark says:

Actually, given the choice between the 70’s version and the 80’s version, I think I prefer the 70’s Hal-9000 theme. The 80’s version is just nothing special to me. So, in that respect, I agree with Warren’s dad. That said, the late 90’s version is truly intense. You have this blood-pressure raising music that pumps out and is weirdly combined with the Hal-9000 like monotone announcer declaring, “From CBC News…” Then the logo lunges out at you and the entire globe sails into your face! Suddenly, crescendo! –> Mansbridge announces “Tonight! Blah blah such and such,” while the music withdraws from crescendo into riveting semi-manic suspense mode. But then it builds up to another crescendo! –> this time with Hana Gartner! So the audience experiences two crescendos with both Peter and Hana! Hey, what could be better? The Globe and logo again fly out at you while Hal-9000 declares “The National, with Hana Gartner and Peter Mansbridge.” The music then enters resolution phase and the broadcast begins. Heck, it’s multiple crescendos! Can’t outdo that.
