680 News today is doing the rounds at polling stations today talking to people. One guys response sums it up:

It’s too bad one of these parties has to win.

I find it baffling that all the players appear so completely unprepared for this election. Hudak I can understand — deer-in-the-headlights is his natural state — but Wynne and Horwath have no excuse. Especially Horwath. If the PCs ever hope to win they will need to get Hudak to do more than stand there with his arms out, looking like a cheerful squirrell. Horwath must find a message that is different in some way from the Liberals, which will be extremely difficult as they have already been driving Liberal fiscal policy for years now. My early prediction? Liberal minority, again.

On election day my prediction still stands. Liberal minority, at least. My hopes for today’s result? PC majority. Ontario needs some tough medicine.

    • TrueNorthist says:

Further, on May 9th our gracious host may also have nailed it:

“UPDATE: Well, so much for my view that Hudak has done okay in the past few days – with his announcement that he plans to cut 20 per cent of the jobs/services in government, his Million Job Plan has undergone drastic weight reduction. And this election is now officially between Wynne and Horwath alone, methinks.”

We shall see, but that was most definitely the moment the PCs went from possible majority to not bloody likely minority, at best.

    • TrueNorthist says:

30 minutes after the polls closed things do not look good for wee Timmy. With ~5% counted the LPO is already leading in 53. 1 away from majority territory. Oh, 54 now. Good heavens.

      • TrueNorthist says:

Sorry for the deluge of comments Mr K. This will be my last post tonight, perhaps. It looks like the PCs did not break through in the GTA which is very bad news for them. The hosts at the Ceeb look jubilant while Sun News is a wake. Alex P looks like she wants to murder something. Wow. An hour in and It’s a blowout. PCs definitely losing big time in TO. The Cbc has called a majority Liberal Gov’t.

  3. W the K - No, not Warren says:

    Same.

Toronto municipal 2010 a close second.

Voted in Beaches – East York today and feel OK about it. Just.

  4. Ken form the Annex says:

    How about federal in ’06?

  5. Justin says:

This wasn’t in Ontario but what about the US presidential election in 2004? Bush vs. Kerry.

  6. Marc L says:

Frankly, if I was still living in Ontario I don’t know how I would vote. The Liberal fiscal plan is completely irresponsible and is bound to result in more pain later on to clean up the mess, to say nothing of the odds of a credit downgrade. On top if it, they don’t deserve to be re-elected just based on their record. Hudak may appear more fiscally responsible, but they guy doesn’t exactly inspire confidence — especially when he tells the economists who pointed out the crucial error in his jobs tally that they’re wrong and that’s it. No they’re 100% right, and as an economist myself, the simple fact that he is able to openly deny the obvious as pointed out by experts in the field tells me that this guy is a bozo and is not fit to run a province. As for the NDP… they are just all over the place. If there are many like myself, you might end up with a very strange, and surpring result.

  7. Doron says:

The 2004 federal election. It was about nothing.

At least in ’06, Harper rolled out some ideas.

  8. Brad Young says:

I have always voted Liberal, just not voting this time. The Liberals have recently reinstated the Spring Bear hunt and I can’t support that.

  9. MississaugaPeter says:

The last NDP government in Ontario was a generation ago. What killed it then was the lack of quality ministers. Rae Days were the right thing to do. My mom worked in the civil service during Rae Days. Less hours, no one fired. Responsible effort to reign in debt. My mom agreed.

During this campaign Andrea has revealed to me that she will be responsible with our money. She is NOT beholden to the unions. Unlike Rae, I think she has quality individuals who would be great ministers. I believe she will do the right thing. For the first time in my life I will vote NDP. And I have made others aware publicly.

Please note folks who criticize NDP campaign preparation. In all of Peel, the NDP were the first to have signs. By at least a week. They had problems because of a lack of money at the provincial level (not the expected union money maybe). But I do not believe it was lack of preparation.

    • MississaugaPeter says:

      Oh Yah!

      Go Croatia Go!

    • david ray says:

NDP came to my door last night and again this morning. Practically offered me a surrey with an orange fringe on top to get me to the polls on time. Very impressive. In Kingston by the way.

    • Coelocanth_Jones says:

We need more people like you, Peter. Jagmeet Singh is the first dipper elected from Peel, even during the Rae years they never made a breakthrough. I know Horwath has been very heavily courting Brampton-Springdale, but have no idea how receptive everywhere else that way would go

  10. kenzOs says:

Registered my contempt for this campaign by voting Green. Wasted, ineffective statement? Hell, yeah. At 5%, here us roa…..er, meow.

  11. Doron says:

I told people to vote but only if they bothered to read up on the issues. Not to make a thoughtless vote.

    • Coelocanth_Jones says:

I so totally agree. It’s always cringe worthy whenever i hear somebody mention how they instructed family or friends vote

  12. Andy says:

The Liberal campaign workers didn’t look to happy when they came around last week. Looked like they have been getting an earful from voters.

  13. Tired of it All says:

So sad. Pupatello wins in a walk…

  14. james curran says:

Yep. That’s all I’ve heard at the doors and in the coffee shops.

  15. donna says:

Just imagine if there is another Liberal minority government and it is brought down within months of this election!

We know that the PCs will be howling for another election while the Dippers will be supporting the Liberals even if they bring down an austerity budget and daring the NDP to vote no confidence again.

A Wynne majority government will absolve the Liberals of their past sins because Ontarians will have forgiven the Liberals for blowing $2+ Billion on gas plants, eHealth, ORNGE and whatever else is still in the Liberal closet of snafu delights.

  16. Ridiculosity says:

I don’t think this election is going to be as close as everyone is predicting. (The polls have been wrong before.)

My gut tells me one of the parties will win big tonight.

  17. Sean says:

For the first time in my life, I made up my mind who I would vote for ON ELECTION day. It was a party I have never supported before.

    • TrueNorthist says:

Monster Raving Loony Party? lol JK. 😉 Probably voted for the Greens. I can see plenty of progressives and even some conservatives parking their votes there today. Look for them to set a new high mark in overall vote count won.

  18. W the K - No, not Warren says:

Election day politico question from someone who hasn’t worked on the ground in 30 years. What is a guy with a clipboard and wearing a Forum Research badge doing in a polling station on election day? Not talking to anyone. Just… there.

  19. sezme says:

Oh boy, I’m pretty excited about Al being quiet for a while or at least having him stop smirking. Just kidding, Al! You know your opinions are always a treasure.

    Pollsters too!

  20. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Hi Warren,

The Common Sense Revolution has been usurped by the resolve of a Common Purpose. I’m smiling broadly ce soir!

    Congratulations Kathleen.

  21. So what does Mr Kinsella say now.

  22. Justin says:

    Liberal majority

Cue the conservatives who will be calling ontarians stupid for exercising their democratic franchise in
    3…….2……..1

  23. Derek Pearce says:

(Hi WK, hope I’m allowed back after my bad behaviour a month ago, genuine mea culpa) But anyhow, I’m fascinated to know your take on this: people know the Libs were scandal-plagued and didn’t “deserve” to win, but were even more spoked by a hard-right public-servant-firing PC gov’t. Talk about voting for the least of a bad bunch. I’m kind of happy but shocked…. In future, how do the Tories find the right message between Hudak/Harris type “destroy all government” and mushy middle John Tory “I’m the soft Tories”? That’s a tough call…

  24. TrueNorthist says:

My last comment tonight, I promise… Your on air comments about the over-use of “scandals” is very apt Warren. It truly has become something folks are far too used to hearing and no longer has the desired effect. I would argue that perhaps it has gone the other way, with the one calling scandal being punished if there is no perp-walk. Sun News had better change their game or they may pull down the CPC with such antics. I am watching SNN right now and with the exception of you, Akin and Giambroni (spelling?) some are really making fools of themselves with all the sour grapes. They are supposed to at least try to be impartial. That kind of behaviour likely does not help conservative fortunes much either. Also you are bang on about Hudak. I think he deserves sole credit for having pulled his party down, twice.

  25. Jacob says:

Dude, when you gonna post a reaction to the results? Can’t wait to see.

  26. Apostate says:

Congrats to Premier Wynne…….I take great pleasure in knowing the Harris boys have once again gone down to defeat……..

  27. Ontario Sux says:

    Enjoy being bankrupt Ontario
