Sexual predators will go wherever it is easiest for them to access victims. If you think the Catholic Church is the easiest place for pedophiles to access children, you are wrong. Are we looking for proof of pedophiles in the priesthood, or proof that the pope said that 2% or priests were pedophiles. If the latter, just ask the pope; if the former, just ask anyone who’s been paying attention in the last 20 years. I bet its higher, the two percent figure is conservative and is based on the ones caught, you know over the last fifty years that they have bothered to even consider it a problem:P The catholic church has alot to answer for this, and it is a criminal situation that has been covered up for eons. I just read (on Wikipedia, but still) that the rates for pedophilia are estimated at under 5%. Do you really believe that the percentage is lower in the clergy than in the general population?
And anyhow, isn’t the real problem the fact that the church didn’t get rid of the ones that they knew about? Moving them from community to community to avoid punishment? That seems to be more to the point, and really isn’t in question.

Sexual predators are covered for everywhere, not just in the Catholic Church. There is rampant sexual abuse of minors by people in the entertainment industry, yet that is totally covered up and victims are either threatened, discredited or silenced (paid off) as a general rule. You certainly don’t see consequences for famous pedophiles, even after their crimes are brought to light.
