    Powerful image.

Just looked at it on Google Earth this morning – hard-pressed to imagine the horrors.

  2. Heinz says:

Will the Jews ever forgive the Germans for the genocide, or will Germans forever wear the curse of the yellow star of David? Is there any forgiveness or is the holocaust horror too immense? No forgiving and no forgetting? When? Never?

      Concern troll alert!

So exactly what is your exact objection to Heinz’ comment, other than your obscure objection?

        • Cameron Prymak says:

That depends on your definition of ‘forgiveness’. But as to ‘forget’, let’s pray we never do that. This picture just starts to tell that long, horrible history.

When I read the post about the gaming culture my first thought went to what the theme of so many Holocaust survivors talk about – the ability of men to have blind, dehumanizing hatred that somehow became accepted as normal.

Never!! It will be forever in our history even though some would like to erase the Holocaust. Jewish generations will always be taught about the Holocaust so the World will remember.

I see it a bit differently.
I’ve read bit about the Dreyfus incident of the early 20th Century. It went on and on, and both brought out and encouraged vicious prejudices, first in France, and then it other parts of Europe. It looked to me as if those prejudices lasted and after 1919, became more public in Central and Eastern Europe. One of the things that has always struck me is that when we have sent people back to Europe for crimes arising from the whole concentration camp system, they are usually form Eastern Europe, not Germany. It looks to me as though German leadership was able to tap a lot of either anti Semitism, or a care less attitude in populations not German.
I agree with you that Germany carries a responsibility, but I think they had a lot of willing help.

Perhaps forgiveness is possible, it could well be. Quite frankly 70 years is still too soon to tell. Honestly, let’s ask that question after 170 years and then have a debate. Also, what’s your rush? Gimme a break.

Can be one outcome of insisting on building a nation state on ethnic purity.

  4. Patrick says:

As long as we are tribal and religious acts of genocide, in the justification of purity, economics, or trenchant dogma, are inevitable. The holocaust, the Tutsis slaughter, Native Americans, Nguema in Equatorial Guinea are all products of our indoctrination in the totems of myth and magic and their inevitable abuse by horrific people in horrific times. Tragically, Auschwitz is not a “one off”.
