I guess we know why Walt Disney killed off mother figures in his cartoons, now

It’s expert opinion in the field of cartooning. Look at all the media cartoonists in Canada; all men!

BTW, all the Hebdo cartoonists who were killed or wounded were men; no women cartoonists there.

    Sorry…..

Sue Dewar does political/editorial cartoons for Sun Media/Quebeor.

Utter bullshit. Hedco cartoonist Corinne “Coco” Rey was the first staffmember confronted by the terrorists. She was spared because she’s a woman but her colleague columnist Elsa Cayat wasn’t so lucky. She was the only female Hedco staffmember murdered because she’s Jewish. And long before the Hedco massacre Seattle cartoonist Molly Norris has been in hiding for the past four years because a fatwah had been issued agaist her because of her cartoons making fun out of islamists.

One of my guilty pleasures is Vanity Fair Magazine. They had a great article about what a – shall we say, less than nice person Mr D was. Here is the link:

  3. Dead or otherwise uninvolved parents are very common in children’s stories. If they had parents they would protect them from the adventure they have in the story.

It’s surprising that someone would think having a mostly male staff was notable enough to ask about back in those days.

He also forgot to mention that cartooning can damage their ovaries, their menses attract bears and they have smaller brains therefore a lower aptitude for graphic arts. It’s science.

The cartooning world may have come a long way, and yet today in many TV commercials and programs, the father is too often portrayed as the bumbling idiot who can’t do anything right without mom coming to the rescue.

Sadly not an uncommon sentiment in his day (about many professions, not just cartooning), and also not politically incorrect then either.

As a refutation, here’s a link to an article about great female animators:

Walt Disney has been lionized as a god like saint without fault by the company he founded, but he had a dark side (racist, anti-Semite, sexist, possibly a government informer etc.) so this news isn’t really news per se’.
Still, dudes been dead for almost 50 years so this attitude was probably shared by many men at that time.
Oh, and Susan Dewer’s cartoons are very funny IMHO along with Kate Beaton.
Just because they aren’t dominating the genre does not mean they’re incapable of doing it.
