“Inappropriate and inaccurate”

Because it was.

There is no comparison between 2015 and 1939. None. And Trudeau – and his speechwriter – should know that.

Oh, and Blaney’s attack on the Koran? Also inappropriate.

This is one of those handy moments which could have had a lot more impact if the CIJA should have taken your advice and not become puppets of the CPC.

    • GFMD says:

They really needed to say that they opposed Kenney’s niquab ban if they wanted to make it look non-political.

Bukhari (52:177) – Allah’s Apostle said, “The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. “O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him.”

This really isn’t a feel good read.

Anyone can pick and choose among the ancient desert texts. From the Old Testament:
(Numbers 31:17-18)–“Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves.”

This is “God” telling the Israelites to kill the Midianites because they worshipped “false gods” (but keep the virgin girls).

I’ve got nothing against followers of any religion, but pick apart any sacred text long enough and you’ll find something ugly.

    Warren,

A successful politician needs to be able to master his sixth sense– the one that instinctively tells him when his words are way off the mark and full of shit. No question that’s what we have here.

Blaney has a penchant for saying ridiculous and outrageous things…Trudeau on the other hand needs to reflect deeply before making ludicrous comments that undermine his credibility as leader.

As I’ve said before, only one man can make or break Trudeau as a party leader and potential prime minister. His name isn’t Harper. He’s called Justin Trudeau.

  4. Jim Goss says:

A brilliant move by Trudeau and his team. I’ve heard more positive comments on this today, than anything coming from Liberal land in a long, long time. Harper is rattled. And this is just the start of giving Harper a taste of his own medicine.

  5. cgh says:

Not quite, Warren. Read your linked piece again. Blaney is attacking the jihadis who abuse the Quran for their own purposes.

  6. Joe says:

So JT thinks that uncovering your face at your citizenship ceremony is the same as being sent to the gas chambers? Is that young feller completely daft?

    • davie says:

No, he suggested that focusing on the clothing of a woman at a public ceremony and claiming it is the same as female slavery is wedge politics.

    • wsam says:

Trudeau was also making the rather obvious point that Canada has discriminated against different groups it considered undesirable before and that discrimination was as wrong then as it is now.

  7. Ridiculosity says:

Seriously? If there was ever a time that I would have thought the CIJA would have thought it was both INAPPROPRIATE AND INACCURATE to split fucking hairs on “degrees” of intolerance and discrimination, it would have been this one.

My disappointment – and disgust – is profound.

Yeats (loosely paraphrased by Trudeau) said it best, “Once you attempt legislation upon religious grounds, you open the way for EVERY kind of intolerance and religious persecution.”

    • sezme says:

Absolutely right. I’m no fan of Trudeau in general, but after listening to this speech (which in no way compared the Conservatives to Nazis as some are implying), I came away a bit more impressed.

    • cgh says:

What utter drivel. There’s all kinds of legislation that opposes the tenets of established religions as being incompatible with a free and democratic society. Do you really need a list of things that various religions support that are illegal in Canada? Or are you simply being selective in opposing legislation that touches upon religion when it suits your views?

      • wsam says:

Many Christians believe the earth was created in 6 days. It should be illegal to believe that. Also. You cannot make water into wine without a lot of ingredients.

  8. Marc-André Chiasson says:

Hey Joe. I don’t believe that Justin said any such thing. I’m betting you did not even read the speech in its entirety so, to help you out, I’m posting it here. Go ahead and read it…and then point out exactly where he stated, as you say, “…that uncovering your face at your citizenship ceremony is the same as being sent to the gas chambers.” https://www.liberal.ca/canadian-liberty-and-the-politics-of-fear/

  9. socks clinton says:

Maybe no H-word because the last remaining Jewish pockets in Syria and Iraq left the past few decades. But ethnic cleansing, forced conversions and sexual slavery of female captives of the Kurds, Assyrian & Coptic Christians, and the Yazidis (whom ISIS hates the most) is comparable.

    • wsam says:

The Shia militias operating under Iranian leadership have been actively cleansing Anbar Province of Sunnis.

That’s ethnic cleansing and Canada is helping.

  10. Jeff P says:

Warren I think that you need to go back and read the speech again. Not once did Trudeau discuss anything that Nazis did. He was discussing the failures of Canadians to treat minorities properly. He put the treatment of Muslims in that context. One of those contexts was the failure of Canada to accept Jewish refugees in the 1930s and 40s.

Now apropos of nothing, how are we doing on our commitment to Syrian refugees?……… yeah that’s what I thought.

  11. Marlene Anderson says:

Justin Trudeau spoke perfectly prepared words in a perfectly controlled manner. Watching the speech it seemed so practiced, obviously rehearsed to death. Where was the fiery passion that the words come from the heart? I cannot shake the feeling that the LPC have a tight leash on him because any time he speaks his own thoughts, they get bogged down in damage control. The party chose unwisely when they put Justin at the helm. Garneau inspires more trust that he has the courage and fortitude to actually lead a country. If Mulcair was leader of the LPC, they’d be a juggernaut the CPC would never vanquish. Canada is tired of Harper, but they’re more afraid of the flimsiness of Trudeau.

  12. wsam says:

Canada’s history of racial, cultural and ethnic discrimination dates from the country’s first days and is despicable. Jews. Asians. Punjabis. Natives, the list is as long as it is depressing. Basically any non-white, non-Protestant group has historically suffered some form of active discrimination in Canada.

    This is our history.

It is inexcusable that the government would even lend the slightest credibility to the racists and bigots who seek to demean our public arenas with their ignorance and hate.

  13. ottlib says:

Canada has a racist history. That is a well documented fact and the spirit of tolerance and acceptance that Canadians of today are justly proud of is a relatively recent development. It began after the Second World War but really took off when the Boomers came of age around 40 or so years ago. It is neither inappropriate nor inaccurate for a person who aspires to be PM one day to remind Canadians of their history.

As well, for decades successive governments, at all levels and of all political stripes, have promoted and supported that spirit until just recently. First Pauline Marois, with her hateful Charter of Quebec Values and now the Harper government with its thinly veiled attack on Muslims have broken from their predecessors. (Both for crassly political reasons) There is nothing wrong with Mr. Trudeau also pointing that out to Canadians. Incidentally, his speech is consistent with reaction to the Quebec Charter and it should be remembered that he was the only Federal party leader to unequivocally condemn the Quebec Charter without being prompted.

He did use some strong language but he is a politician, so it should surprise no one, and we have all heard much worse in the last decade or so. As well, strong language might be just the thing we need to give Canadians a swift kick in their complacency, with regard to the erosion of their freedoms, as we struggle to adjust to the post-9/11 world.
