Not sure I’d use him to announce something this big. But it’s big.

Breaking news: Pipsqueak Penishead bribes us with our own money.

    • Matt says:

And that’s different from every politician in history how??

      • cynical says:

Because I dislike him more than most politicians. That’s all.
I reserve my ad hominem attacks and name-calling for those who piss me off so much I can’t think straight.
        How’s that?

        • Patrick says:

          Does anyone like Pierre Poilievre?

          • Mrs. Green Acres says:

The good people of southern Ottawa keep voting him in, much to my chagrin.

Either they like him or the other parties need to field better candidates.

  2. Danny says:

This is Election Heavy Artillery. When Napoleon was asked if God was on his side, he replied “God is on the side of heavy artillery.”
So having Poilievre announce it is appropriate. There is nothing subtle or nuanced about PP. Bull in a china shop. Heavy artillery.
Fort Sumpter was remembered as the first cannon shots of the American Civil war. This is the first cannon shot of our election.

  3. Joseph says:

    Actually I remember Fort Sumpter[sic.] spelled without a ‘P’ 😉

  4. JJackson says:

Liberals can have the Pot Vote, NDP can have the Aboriginal Vote, Conservatives want the Family Vote and this will nail it in but good.

What mom and dad will say no to this blatant vote buying? Where will the outrage come from to deny money for children?

When you control the levers of power and money you can buy votes unhindered and laugh at the opposition in the face.

    • James Bow says:

As a father of two, I’m guessing I’m in line for some of this money. I suppose the Conservatives want me to feel grateful and vote accordingly. I say, no way. What I feel with this announcement is… used, frankly. My tax dollars are being handed back to me as a simple check. They’ve done nothing but grease the wheels of the cheque cutting machines, they’ve funded no useful government program, and I’m supposed to feel grateful? If that’s the best you can do with my cash, why take it in the first place?

And make no mistake, I know that this is happening only because the election is weeks away.

Screw your cheque, Mr. Harper. And screw you. Any suggestions on where I can donate it? Library programs? A national park? Maybe an environmental charity group?

  5. davie says:

$3 billion? Y’mean the government takes $3 billion from people, then…?

  6. smelter rat says:

Skippy is an idiot, and i wouldn’t trust him to tell me the sun rises in the east. And he’s the CPC braintrust these days.

    • JJackson says:

Never underestimate a winner with a bagful of money and an army of drones doing his bidding. Wishful thinking is best left to horoscopes.

  7. Kelly says:

NDP will say its a good start, but not enough. We’ll close tax loopholes on the rich go after offshore tax havens and spend,5 billion on families…also end income, splitting for household, income, over $200,000. It’s NDP supports single moms, Harper has cash, for, the cast of the Housewives of Vancouver.

    • MF says:

Here is where the NDP needs to adjust its message. Arguably, this is more progressive, given that the $ is taxed, than providing cheap daycare to double income families including very well off double income families.

There are many housewives and househusbands, both full and part time, who could use the extra cash and who do not want to be told that daycare is the where there kids should be.

Many find the comments that assume that stuff like this is for rich housewives insulting. I am sure it turns off many voters who are leaning toward the NDP.

    • MF says:

That being said, I would simply give a better tax break to all those with kids. Do so in a way that helps those in $ need the most. Reduce administrative costs by making it a part of the income tax process.

If the NDP would ensure that they were going to do something like this, in addition to their daycare plank, they would attract a lot of votes.

  8. MississaugaPeter says:

Now if either the NDP or Liberal war rooms had any brains, they would come out say: $3B, that’s all? We promise $5B!

  9. Nic Coivert says:

Notice the very subtle plug, for ‘Canadian families’.
As if that needs to be stated.

What this reads as, to their core, is ‘not for Non-Canadian families.

  10. ABlanas says:

This is great, and combined with the rising employment numbers, means 4 more years of Harper. In particular, the 905 will stay blue. Now let’s all go back to sleep for the rest of the summer.

  11. doconnor says:

It seems to me even low information voters would see only cynicism in this.

  12. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Warren,

Ah, the Conservative sub-text: oh yeah, that’s right, the voters are idiots who can be easily bought off. Canadian voters: Strong. Proud. Free. Guillible.

    Thank you, Stephen.

  13. ian turnbull says:

As someone who has always leaned conservative – I hate this. Taxing people only to give it back to a select few, segmented by political impact versus real need is abhorrent.

Either reduce the tax or use the money on people who need it the most. That being said it appears as though there is a large segment of the Canadian population who either don’t understand how they are being bribed with their own money or have a different philosophy on the role of government.

The thing is the Liberals and NDP are promising the same or more of this. Which sadly, is proof the strategy works.

  14. Doris says:

Cheques flow July 20th and hopefully everybody will take them and give the finger to the people who gave it to them. Millennials are ungrateful little gits so the money went to the wrong people. Now voter loyalty would be rewarded of the money went to the Seniors after all they tend to like Harper more and more importantly understand where the money comes from.

  15. Kevin T. says:

Great, I get money AND I get to totally vote for someone else! Yay democracy.

  16. kre8tv says:

If anything, it underlines how the Cons have been reduced to relying on third-rate bench strength with the likes of Pierre to sell this thing. He’s unlikeable and outside of their base support, voters don’t believe him. And I also don’t think it’s a stretch to say that there’s so much cynicism out there now that a good number of target voters will gladly take the money and vote for someone else.

  17. DJ says:

This is big too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmmSV1jtK3s The NDP has decided to play hardball. More of this will help push voters to make a change.

  18. DJ says:

I don’t think this is a game changer at all. People will of course take the money but many have already made up their mind that they will NOT vote Conservative.

The Conservatives are in big trouble in BC (where I am). Environmental issues are playing a role. Dissatisfaction with both the provincial and federal levels on these issues are leading people to support the NDP. I hear from people who have never voted NDP that they will this time. Mulcair seems up to the job as PM for them. He is seen as a leader. Redistribution of ridings does not seem to be helping the Conservatives. Places like North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Delta, and Richmond are either tossups or leaning Liberal or NDP. That’s Incredible! The Conservatives have to be leading in places like this to win. They are not.

I predict this election will be a game changer in that the Conservatives will be tossed out. The right will fracture again after Harper leaves. The next prime minister will be Mulcair. Harper will quit and go back to Calgary.

    • DJ says:

Having MPs like Wai Young state that C-51 reflects Jesus’s teachings and would have stopped the Air India bombing reminds me of the old days of the Reform Party and the Canadian Alliance. MPs and candidate shooting from the hip is not helpful to the CPC reelection campaign.
