  3. Student501 says:

    why?

    • edward nuff says:

because new Jesus harper wouldn,t allow that tar sands hatin furrin funded radical Neil Young to perform. He might sing keep on rocking in the free world and all the heads in Conlandia would explode.

      • Matt says:

        Wow.

You will literally take any subject and turn it into an anti-Harper won’t you.

just tossin back the grenade Mr Moron. Just tossin it back. Have fun putting the pin back in.

          • Matt says:

UH, what grenade? You create a bullshit scenario from your own twisted fantasy world where Harper has stepped in forbiding Young from playing the event because of his anti oil sands crusade.

When some “throws a grenade” into a situation, that “grenade” is supposed to be, you know, something that actually happened that the person was trying to keep from going public.

oh, well I guess it sort of goes with that lets waste taxpayers’ money on idiot ideas thing. How embarrassing to have him. They couldn’t find a Canadian? it would have been better to have all the school choirs come together and do one big final song and be done with it. This rude obnoxious American and with my tax dollars. Oh, well, so much for the rest of the waste of money called the Pan Am games.

Like there were no quality entertainers in South American??????

I guess the Biebs was busy

just plain stupidity….must have been a committee choice so no one takes blame…athletics have been great….now ending on big low…dumb

This is awesome. I’m just waiting for Kanye to run up on stage during a medal presentation and claim that the gold should go to Beyoncé. My tax dollars at work.

  8. lance mclean says:

Without sounding like to much of an ass, why does anyone care, from the sounds of it Torontonians don’t like or want to see these games anyway?

  9. Jon says:

My first reaction was “Why not a Canadian?”, but for star power and entertainment value, it’s hard to beat Kanye. I could talk about why I like Kanye’s music, but I think this group might find Lou Reed’s words have more impact:

“Kanye West is a child of social networking and hip-hop. And he knows about all kinds of music and popular culture. The guy has a real wide palette to play with. That’s all over Yeezus. There are moments of supreme beauty and greatness on this record, and then some of it is the same old shit. But the guy really, really, really is talented. He’s really trying to raise the bar. No one’s near doing what he’s doing, it’s not even on the same planet.”

The whole thing’s worth a read for anyone who has an opinion about Kanye’s music: http://thetalkhouse.com/music/talks/lou-reed-of-the-velvet-underground-talks-kanye-wests-yeezus/

Not sure I accept Lou as an authority on this. He had a staggering GQ (garbage to quality) ratio for someone heralded a s a major artist. However, I give him full credit on being able to dine out on the Warhol connection for as long as he did.

John Tory thinking Kanye West was part of the local music scene …

But best is Indie 88’s first vote, and now petition, to have Kanye West sing a particular famous Canadian singer’s song at the closing ceremonies.

Kanye West is the self-proclaimed abomination of Obama’s nation. By bringing up that he’s ruffled Obama’s feathers (and Bush’s) you only re-emphasize how relevant he is as an artist, especially compared to the industry-manufactured, bubblegum popstars or aging rockstars that people would have preferred. I’m yet to read an intelligent or informed criticism for why he shouldn’t perform. Everything falls into irrelevant attacks about his interviews or sexist diatribes about his wife. Meanwhile, his musical output is the most consistently critically acclaimed of any artist of his generation. If he doesn’t fit into the box of how you think a rockstar should sound/look, maybe you’re the problem

  12. Jon Adams says:

It’s adorable that the most interesting thing about the PanAm games so far has been the choice of performer at the closing ceremony.

  13. Harvey Bushell says:

I’m still holding out hope that this whole thing is ruse masterminded by the now influential, very wealthy and justifiably still pissed Taylor Swift.

She’s going to ambush him on stage just as he begins his set and with the aid of a few muscly and leather clad friends, male and female, will snatch away his mic and beat him into submission and won’t stop until he starts crying and is forced to spank his own ass.

Then when he slinks off stage Neil Young will appear with his band and perform Rockin’ in the Free World.

Although my second choice would be to just not let him into the country and instead set up a huge video screen and play the full 1.5 hour set of Stompin Tom Connors live at the Horseshoe tavern.

  14. Harvey Bushell says:

And free Molson Canadian for everyone.

  15. Paul Jonassen says:

My main problem with Kanye West is that he is an obnoxious ego maniac; and being black is no excuse. If we have to bring in foreign talent when we tons of it in Canada, why not someone like the Columbian superstar Shakira. That would have been truly Pan American.
