Our son, teenage smart aleck

Write an innocent post offering Christmas wishes, while simultaneously poking fun at agnostics and atheists, and what do you get? This is what you get.

He’s 17.

Smart alecky comebacks to religious types is what make it the best time of the year.

    Joyous Saturnalia!

  2. Iris Mclean says:

You have an enlightened son. He nailed it!
Now if we could get rid of all that god-awful “seasonal” music, life would be good.

    • Scotian says:

I could live with the music if there was more than roughly the same dozen songs being done in endless variations, most of which variations just purely SUCK!!! I end up shopping in stores and malls these days listening to music in headphones for self preservation of my sanity and musical good taste in self defence because of how bad I find these tunes. Not because of the subject material, but simply because musically they simply are that bad IMHO!

I could wish that it were nothing but religious hymns done by respectable choirs, at least then I know I would be getting music that doesn’t make me want to rip my ears off, even if I am not a religious person anymore.

  3. Peter says:

    constricting religious traditions

If he’s 17, no doubt he is referring to the oppressive horror of being asked to bow his head for Grace before Christmas dinner (“Bummer”), not the gifts or festive food he thinks originated with the Enlightenment.

  4. Maps Onburt says:

I’m an orthodox atheist but I still wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Whether or not Jesus was the son of God, there is little doubt he existed and he did good work and so the celebration of his birth is a good thing. It brings out the best in humanity (notwithstanding the commerciality of it courtesy the retail business) and is a fun time of year. I enjoy the time spent with family and still decorate a tree, hang Christmas lights with the best of them. Smart Aleck is smarter than you give him credit for! Merry Christmas to all!

    • Peter says:

I have to ask. What is an orthodox atheist? As opposed to what, a heterodox one? Do you burn your heretics? We faithful would like to put our feet up, pop some corn and watch your schism unfold.

  5. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Warren,

I am an RC but only nominally. (I don’t plan on switching or giving up.) My faith in God is a wonderful gift. At 54, I should have been dead twice already — but God had other plans, it seems.

    Happy Holidays to all.

  6. Derek Pearce says:

Haha touché to him. Happy Pagan Solstice Celebration everyone! I mean, there’s a reason Dec 25 was picked as Jesus’s b-day and not say, August 7th or April 12th or some more random day.

    • Christian says:

Bingo! You nailed it. It was a pagan festival intended to banish the dark and the cold. Then the Christians came around and said; ” Hey we have a sun god too! Actually the Son of God and guess what? Today’s his birthday! What a coincidence!”.

    I don’t understand Atheism?

How does one not believe in something that doesn’t exist?
