The Academy Awards are bollocks, like all award shows

They’re all mostly rigged, in my humble estimation, and are basically orgies in solipsism and exclusion. I never, ever watch award shows. I detest them. They’re crap.

However, I read on the Twitter machine this morning the following encouraging things:

Spotlight is about the importance of truth and justice, but also the critical importance of newspapers in achieving both.  To keep newspapers around, subscribe, right now, to the Globe and Mail or the Toronto Star.

And to understand why Ms. Roessler is a big deal to me, watch her in the video below, in the band she used to play in.  The band was called Black Flag.

Too bad “Spotlight” was not a better movie. Not even sure why it was nominated. I found “Truth” to be a better done movie regarding the challenges the press faces.

I agree Spotlight is not a great film. It’s a good, workmanlike drama that does tell an important story. But there’s nothing particularly outstanding about it. Of course, one of the world’s thickest books would be films and performances that the Oscars have overlooked or snubbed. And Groucho Marx used to argue — quite correctly, I think — the Oscars ought to have a separate category for comedies, because there’s a definite bias towards “serious” and “important” pictures.

Warren. I hope that your position re: awards show won’t stop you from seeking out Lorde’s tribute to David Bowie at last week’s Brit awards. The band was exciting and flawless and Lorde herself caught the spirit of ‘Life on Mars’ perfectly. Touching and beautiful.

I don’t watch the Oscars but the Hollywood Foreign Press’s Golden Globes are a hoot as they serve unlimited drinks to the assembled audience. As the night wears on, it gets messier and messier.

Approx 3400 people attended the Oscar’s last night, mainly rich white people, and, just guessing here, but, a collective carbon footprint of 100,000 people. The theme of last night’s Oscars, Diversity and the Greening of the planet.
I would imagine that most of them are good people, but, man the irony is dumbfounding.

I had no idea Kira Roesler was a woman. I always liked Black Flag but after Damaged, I tended to follow the Meat Puppets and Husker Du for my SST fix. Maximum congratulations to Ms. Roesler and a new kind of respect for Black Flag. Cool. Thanks Warren.

Interestingly, Kira and Henry Rollins did not get along (though he also didn’t get along well with Greg Ginn). That said, she was my favorite Black Flag bassist, adding a lot of depth and tone to their songs.
