Money (that’s what I want)

Yes, that is the Barrett Strong classic – played here by four young Brits, (whose genius muse/mentor passed away last night, RIP). It’s also the subject-matter of this problem, currently the talk of Ontario political politics.

It’s bad for the politicians – all of them – and it’s bad for democracy. The solution?

Simple. As a Jean Chretien loyalist, I am happy to remind everyone about this. It’ll work.

Well, I’m sure you would acknowledge Chretien changed the political party donation law on his way out of office to royally screw Paul Martin.

Wynne won’t change anything as the Ontario Liberals are the chief beneficiary of massive union donations and huge advertising campaigns during elections effectively doubling the Liberals election spending limits.

From what I’ve seen, it has done little to stop the rightward drift of the economic policies of all the major parties. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s the think tanks they still fund and the media allowing themselves to be more influenced by the boardroom.

BC’s campaign finance laws are pretty wide open as well. Municipal finances were only just tightened up in the last round of elections. Our federal system is “OK” but still needs some work. Personally, I liked the per vote subsidy as it made smaller / start up parties viable. Without it the greens will wither on the vine. I’m not a green but value a multi party system for the diversity of voices it brings to public discourse.
