When you fire your campaign manager mid-campaign

It’s never usually good.

I was there on the national Liberal campaign in 1984 when John Turner did it to Bill Lee, and replaced him with Keith Davey. Senator Davey should have been the head guy from the start. By the time John brought him in, it was too late.

In August 2015, around the time of the Eve Adams/assorted other messes, there was a persistent and credible rumour that a “cottage coup” was underway, and that unnamed forces were pushing to have Gerald Butts and Katie Telford replaced by David Herle et al. Trudeau would have none of it, apparently, and wisely stuck with the campaign management who brought him to the dance, and was thereby vaulted from third place to first. Good decision.

Now Donald Trump has jettisoned this creepy Corey person, the one who manhandles females reporters.

“Donald J. Trump has fired his contentious campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, a move that comes as the presumptive Republican nominee faces challenges as he heads into the general election.

Mr. Lewandowski could not immediately be reached for comment about his departure, which was announced by the campaign.

“The Donald J. Trump Campaign for President, which has set a historic record in the Republican primary having received almost 14 million votes, has today announced that Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign,” the campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, said in a statement. “The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future.”

Trump, who is a pathological liar as much as he is a racist, can spin it however he wants. He has fired his campaign manager because his campaign is in trouble. Big trouble.

He has alienated women. He has alienated Latinos. He has alienated African-Americans. He has alienated the disabled. He has alienated every large constituency he needed to be competitive, in fact. Barring a terrorist October Surprise, the short-fingered vulgarian is going down, hard.

When you dump your campaign manager mid-campaign, then, it means usually just one thing.

It means you’re going to lose.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!!! The Republicans are worried that they might lose the Senate. Can the House be far behind? It’s not that Hillary is a terrific candidate, she’s OK. Rather, the Republicans brought it on themselves. Or so it would seem five months before the election.

This is the first time Trump has started losing. This is where we’ll see just how dangerous Trump will be.

Oh, I hope so. But I’m not counting any chickens yet. November is a long way off. And maybe in the past the performance of a candidate at this stage has been predictive of the outcome, I think we could all agree that Donald Trump is an unprecedented sort of candidate, and lessons from American election campaigns past may not mean a lot. I also am wondering if this lingering FBI investigation or associated document leaks, into Clinton is going to torpedo her campaign, or if it is just going to fizzle out quietly, or cause problems after the election.

Worse thing about Trump is that he is giving Americans a Walmart, Wall Street, war monger for president.

I look at American election polls on ‘Real Clear Politics.’ They publish daily, – quite a few different polls. Monday, Montmouth has Clinton 49, Trump 41. But then Monmouth has Johnson and Stein included: Clinton 44, Trump 37, Johnson 9, Stein 4.
This is the first time I have seen Stein mentioned on one of their polls.

Would a more conventional Republican candidate be less beholden to Wall Street or less of a war monger then Clinton?

Yes. Eisenhower would be a peacenik by the standards of today’s neoconservative controlled democratic party. Nixon originally looked at universal single payer healthcare and a guaranteed annual income (Clinton was all talk — as all sellouts are). Nixon increased welfare rates (Clinton 1 decimated welfare) and established the EPA. Nixon was a crooked creep, to be sure, but America’s poor were better off under Nixon than they are under today’s Dems…much better.

Someone needed to be fired. My advise, Donnie, is don’t stand in front of any mirrors.

It’s a bit of a stretch from the examples given to Trump losing the campaign.

    It’s still June!

A lot of white Americans won’t admit to pollsters they support Trump, but my guess is he has at least five more points than the polls show. A lot of Bernie’s support will bleed off to Stein. Mark my words, Hilary is no progressive. She is as phony as a $3 bill . . . although I’m sure she would happlyy take a pile of those from anyone willing to donate them to her foundation. Look at her closely…the corners of her mouth don’t point up when she (fake) smiles and her eyes don’t sparkle. She won’t be President. Paul Ryan might be, but not Ms. Clinton.

    Warren,

This must be the reason why America is great: you’ve got people not willing to admit they’ll vote for Trump — and others unwilling to share that they’ll never vote for Clinton. God bless the U.S.A.!

    Warren,

And people thought our Senate is a disgrace. Maybe ours can now vote on gun control…

One rumour has it that Trump’s daughter had Corey fired because of his spreading unkind stories about Trump’s son-in-law. My guess is that Corey made unwise comments about the daughter.
It is all too silly. Corey will make money from a future tell-all book.
