  1. Douglas W says:

We knew he’d be back. Inevitable. Let’s see how good he is this time around? Because defending the brand and a government’s track record is a lot harder than attacking a sitting (Harper) government that had worn out its welcome.

  2. Ronald O'Dowd says:

Apparently, you and I don’t live on the same planet as those people. They will tank fast in the polls and it won’t be recoverable. This just put Scheer in the PM’s chair.

What utter disregard and contempt for voters. Beyond reason.

    • Douglas W says:

Will this draw the ire of JW-R and Dr. JP? These exceptional women may have pictures.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

        Doug,

The problem with JWR is that she remains conflicted: she’s still a Liberal at heart. She has to decide which is more important, surrendering future leadership ambitions and actively cleaning up the party post-defeat OR playing a chess game and biding her time up until the next leadership race. She can’t pull off both and she knows it.

  3. The Doctor says:

Hah! Reminds me of the Shiela Copps resignation-that-really-wasn’t-a-resignation-after-all. A Liberal Party specialty.

  4. the real Sean says:

The *not crazy wing* of the Liberal Party should be cheering this. Anything that contributes to the end of the PM Zoolander disaster is a good thing.

  5. Max says:

This indicates a few things – how thin on talent the Liberal War Room is; how Trudeau is so not ready to lead; and how rudderless the Liberal Party is. The LPC is no better that the Republicans – not a whimper from MPs or the membership when their leader does gross, unethical things such as bringing back Butts. And yet, most die hard Liberals will find a way to rationalize voting for Sockboy Groping, Indigenous-insulting, ethically-challenged LPC Leader. TRuth be told, PET wouldn’t tap him for a Junior Parliamentary Secretary post.

  6. Doug says:

I voted all of the above but believe that Butts’ involvement improves Liberal prospects. He may be evil, but he is the only brain in the inner circle.

    • Douglas W says:

JT may fear that, without Butts, his campaign will tank.

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Doug,

Butts is not evil by any stretch of the imagination. My impression was that he left on principle. Apparently not. That’s it in a nutshell.

      • Douglas W says:

        Ron: Butts never left.

      • Fred from BC says:

I never did figure out why Butts actually ‘resigned’ in the first place, while at the same time claiming that he had done nothing wrong. That’s just not how that works, sorry…

        • Tod Cowen says:

Not rocket science. (Since space exploration is Warren’s theme of the week.) The opposition parties and parts of the punditry would have bellowed ever-increasing levels of outrage until Butts left–ditto for Wernick. The latter picked a decent excuse to get out of the line of fire, and the former knew his departure was a prerequisite to deflating the story. And departing when he did created enough of an interval that he could come back in a campaign role. My guess is that Joe and Jane Frontporch will see this as inside baseball, and will pay scant attention. I’m sure he’ll have very little visibility outside the campaign, but he won’t need to be externally visible to be effective.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

            Tod,

How much did the average Jane and Joe know about SNC, much less Norman? And yet it was enough for them to severely tank– as they will do again in short order. Elections are all about perception not reality. And they look, at the very least, too clever by half with this one. Translation: BOOM!

          • Fred from BC says:

Maybe. I get why Wernick left (she got him on tape) but the Gerald Butts issue was still a matter of ‘he said/she said’. Didn’t really deflate the story, either…Michael Wernick did that, quite a bit later. We’ll see.

  7. Lawrence Barry says:

Does this mean you can put lipstick on a pig?

  8. Gilbert says:

If we want to make voters forget about the SNC-Lavalin scandal, this is the wrong way to do it. It gives me the impression that the prime minister is really desperate, and that he believes he needs Gerald Butts to have any chance of winning.

If he were clever, he would have communicated with Gerald Butts until election day in secret, but perhaps he was worried that his opponents would find out about it. I think the electorate will agree that budgets don’t balance themselves. I also think the electorate is ready for a change.

  9. Douglas W says:

Images of Butts, JT, and JW-R/JP side-by-side-by-side, in an Opposition election ad: effective, or flogging a dead horse?

  10. Douglas W says:

Who’s running the war rooms for the Conservatives and New Democrats?

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Douglas,

Seems to me that Hamish is top dog for the CPC but I stand to be corrected. NDP: haven’t got a clue. Anyone?

  11. Fred J Pertanson says:

    Stupidity or desperation?

    Probably a bit of both.

    Massive Liberal fail. IMHO.

    Cheers, Warren.
