The buck never stops with that orange bastard

As an aside, who can forget Truman’s efforts to convince JFK to withdraw as a contender for the Democratic nomination for President before the convention. He thought Kennedy too inexperienced to properly handle the buck.

Kennedy probably ended up handling the buck better than anyone else had, even Truman himself.

“Kennedy probably ended up handling the buck better than anyone else had, even Truman himself.”

I used to admire Kennedy too, before I found out how he actually ‘handled’ the Cuban missile crisis. It’s just blind luck that the world didn’t end up in a nuclear war.

      • Fred,

What did you not like about the way he handled it? For my part, I still believe that but for his decisions, I would have been dead before my third birthday.

Well, to start with, no Bay of Pigs= no October Crisis.

(Kruschev’s writings and others, made that quite clear in later years)

Kennedy was seen as weak and ineffectual by the Soviet leadership, and that was what prompted the whole Cuban missile thing. The US Navy allowed one Soviet tanker to break through their blockade (oops..I mean “quarantine”…a blockade would have been *illegal*) that could have been carrying anything. Kennedy held all the cards and all the advantages (military, nuclear and otherwise), and Kruschev STILL beat him by not only extracting a promise not to invade Cuba but forcing Kennedy to agree to a secret deal to remove those Turkish-based missiles as well (and just not tell anyone why). Krischev couldn’t believe his luck…huge blunder by Kennedy.

The only positive thing about the whole incident was that it set the stage for the eventual rise of Ronald Reagan, who the Soviets were *definitely* wary of….and for good reason, as it turns out.

He may have done some good civil rights things, but his handling of the Cold War was awful, in my opinion.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

            Fred,

One small quibble: Kennedy claimed the tradeoff of dismantling Turkish missiles was worth it because they were already obsolete. And while I’m at it, if the Soviets thought Kennedy to be a joke, etc., why didn’t they move in on West Berlin?

These issues are just two of many that Biden hasn’t been rightfully confronted with. Controlled snipits from sympathetic media are not going to do it as as Biden eventually has to be brought out of his basement when America gets slowly brought back to some semblance of normalcy.

Biden is a weak, compromised candidate, essentially a throw away, saving the real up and comers for 2024. If by hook or by crook (mail in ballots, no ID voters etc) Biden somehow wins , he will simply be a puppet. The strings will pulled by the VP and the Dem- swampers.

Of course in Warrensworld, orange man bad, no matter what he does. ….

Oh, the old “Democrats only win when they cheat” thingy. How cute. You should really get a job with Breitbart or Rush Limbaugh, your rhetorical skills are sadly wasted here.

    • Mark D says:

I agree with you that Trump has the advantage as the incumbent, and that Biden is placeholder for 2024 when Democrats are much more likely to win back the White House.

Nevertheless, Biden is not a throwaway.

Rather, his presence as a moderate and centrist Democrat and an experienced statesman also protects
the moderate and centrist Democrat candidates downticket who could find themselves vulnerable if the Democrat presidential candidate were viewed as too extreme.

Additionally, since incumbents in U.S. presidential elections are notoriously difficult to defeat absent major third party interference, Biden also provides Democrats with an opportunity to make gains in the Senate, House, and at the state level. That is, voters are still likely to reelect Trump because he’s the incumbent, but voters become more aware of Trump’s weaknesses due to the contrast with Biden. So these same voters also vote Democrat downticket in hopes that a Democrat House, Senate, and state-level government will keep Trump in check.

These are but two of many issues that Biden will have to address before the election. He will not be able to get by with scripted short clips delivered (not convincingly) from a teleprompter. When he is helped out of the basement to debate Trump look for a bloodbath.

Biden is a weak, compromised candidate who was chosen for face recognition and is just attempting to ride Obama’s coattails. He is a throw away, sacrificial lamb candidate, the party saving its younger up and comers for 2024.

If by hook or by crook (mail in ballots, no ID voting etc) Biden wins election, he will simply be a puppet. The administration will be run by the VP, the strings being pulled by the Dem-swampdwellers.

If America is opened up slowly and successfully, Trump looks good for a second term. Some timely prosecutions of RussiaGate, impeachment bad actors before the election might be just what is needed to secure the swing states.

Dunno, I think Trump won this round with his “let them eat cake” ad: https://twitter.com/peterjhasson/status/1252374440572157956

Good article about pandemic preparedness by Paul Wells in Macleans

    https://www.macleans.ca/news/world/the-doomed-30-year-battle-to-stop-a-pandemic/

“Justin Trudeau’s mandate letters to his three health ministers so far—Philpott, Ginette Petitpas Taylor and Hajdu—are public. None mentioned preparation for an infectious disease outbreak”

Would Biden have done better? I think Biden would have been focusing on the same things as Trudeau. I base that on listening to Biden’s campaign, and the behaviour of Democrats such as Cuomo and De Blasio in New York.

  7. At least Biden has the brains to shut the hell up when he’s entirely clueless about what is being discussed. Trump…

  8. Derek Pearce says:

At least Biden has the brains to shut the hell up when his opponent is VERY busy destroying himself before the public every single day.
