Trump, from one who would know

This comes from a Republican, Steve Schmidt. He ran John McCain’s 2008 campaign for president.

“Donald Trump has been the worst president this country has ever had. And I don’t say that hyperbolically. He is. But he is a consequential president. And he has brought this country in three short years to a place of weakness that is simply unimaginable if you were pondering where we are today from the day where Barack Obama left office. And there were a lot of us on that day who were deeply skeptical and very worried about what a Trump presidency would be. But this is a moment of unparalleled national humiliation, of weakness.

“When you listen to the President, these are the musings of an imbecile. An idiot. And I don’t use those words to name call. I use them because they are the precise words of the English language to describe his behavior. His comportment. His actions. We’ve never seen a level of incompetence, a level of ineptitude so staggering on a daily basis by anybody in the history of the country whose ever been charged with substantial responsibilities.

It’s just astonishing that this man is president of the United States. The man, the con man, from New York City. Many bankruptcies, failed businesses, a reality show, that branded him as something that he never was. A successful businessman. Well, he’s the President of the United States now, and the man who said he would make the country great again. And he’s brought death, suffering, and economic collapse on truly an epic scale. And let’s be clear. This isn’t happening in every country around the world. This place. Our place. Our home. Our country. The United States. We are the epicenter. We are the place where you’re the most likely to die from this disease. We’re the ones with the most shattered economy. And we are because of the fool that sits in the Oval Office behind the Resolute Desk.”

I don’t consider President Trump the worst president in the history of the US. He has called the WHO a puppet of China, has stood up to China, has approved the Keystone Pipeline and hasn’t started any wars. He’s imposed more sanctions on Russia than Barack Obama. I say Jimmy Carter was worse.

      Gilbert,

You know the Jared and Ivanka Show that’s supposed to bring us peace in the Middle East? Carter at least managed that partially with the Israeli and Egyptian accords.

No question that Jimmy Carter’s presidency will always be generally considered to be a failed one. He was dealt a shitty hand of cards (sky-high oil prices, sky-high global inflation, Iranian Revolution and hostage crisis), but of course you can counter that Trump has been dealt the coronavirus.

The whopping difference between the two is that Jimmy Carter is a genuinely nice and good person, and has in particular been an exemplary human being since leaving office. If there is a heaven, Jimmy Carter is going there. Not so with Trump, to say the least.

There are some conservative anti Trumpers like Bolton are angry because the Don didn’t want to play the lobbies war games in the middle east for the interest of a particular country.

Steve Schmidt is a Reagan Republican so not surprised and he was always quite reasonable and moderate, never crazy like Trump. He is also bang on for most part, I guess only area is whether US is epicenter or Brazil, but both ran by incompetent narcissists who are very similar in so many ways.

It would be nice if a lot of Republicans had the guts to say things like this. Perhaps if enough of them grew a spine, then enough people who voted Trump in 2016 will switch allegiances, and drive the Orange Menace from office.

You’re never going to get the rabid Trump supporters to switch – you could show photographic evidence of Trump engaged in criminal activity, and they’d believe it was made up. However, they alone won’t win the election. It is the swing voters from 2016 that – hopefully – now see Trump for the disaster that he is.

    • Steve,

I stick to my own cooking: as goes the U.S. economy in November, so will go the Presidency. Trump must already be shitting his pants thinking of Ford, Carter and H.W. Bush.

Perhaps The ChosenOneTM has finally found his true purpose in life: ToGetTheBoot.

There is evidence out there that some of the so-called Never Trumper movement is having an impact. The Lincoln Project ads are getting a lot play and exposure, and clearly the Lincoln Project is living in Trump, given the fact that they (including George Conway) have been the subject of several Trump Rage Tweets etc.

The Bulwark has been a roaring success too. Furthermore, recent polling suggests that independents are leaning heavily towards Biden and that some moderate Republicans — not a ton but some — are peeling off.

Meanwhile, the festering coronavirus clusterfuck in Trumpy places like Florida, Arizona and Texas is not good news for Trump.

Fully agree with Schmidt but a lot of those who are never Trumpers aren’t in office as Trump cult now controls the party so any congress or senator who is not in line will get primaried thus why many are choosing to fall in line. Not right but that is why. For those asking about Mitt Romney, that is simple he is from Utah. Utah is mostly Mormon and a fairly peculiar state on Trump. One of the most conservative states in US, yet unlike other deep red states, Trump is quite unpopular so Romney sort of fits his state well: conservative but anti-Trump. No other state is like this. Others are either liberal or moderate thus anti-Trump or conservative and pro-Trump. Not sure exact reason but Evangelicals seem to be falling in line with Trump just to get control of Supreme court even though he lives his life in every way they should oppose. On the contrary Mormons are mostly disgusted with Trump and his behavior.
