In case you’re wondering

Understood – so will post this for others to weigh-in on. 🙂

This situation evidences the disconnect between what DOES force people out of office and what SHOULD force people out of office.

A very ill-advised but consensual relationship costs you your job. Yet flying all around the world blowing hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on completely unnecessary things doesn’t seem to shake our GG one bit. Nor the GG before her, nor the GG before that… etc…

The former has essentially zero impact to the citizenry, whereas the latter absolutely does. It’s a strange world we live in.

  2. PJH says:

Dang, I was looking forward to your take on the matter.

As an aside, in France, if a politician is found to have a mistress, his popularity goes up…..

  3. Warren,

To say the very least, it was quite a surprise. But as usual, the double standard exists where a PC gets slammed by guess who while a LPC gets a pass, even though all of Ottawa has been aware of it for quite a while now.

  4. And I’ll add this, it boggles my mind at least how people like Hillary can stick with these bozos after the fact. If I was a wife, I’d take them for practically every cent they’ve got in the divorce courts. But I digress, ever so slightly.

I will bite. I don’t know much about Toronto politics but he seemed like a solid guy from all appearances. At least he was a leader with a functioning brain. Kind of refreshing. Ridiculous that something like this would bring him down give all of the Sodom and Gomorrah rumours about Ottawa that I suspect the MSM has no interest in chasing down. Then, of course, grope-gate. I would list all the rumours but suspect libel laws would apply. Nothing to see here-move along. This “scandal” is so quaint by comparison.

  6. Peter Williams says:

Perhaps he should have taken the Team Trudeau approach (which is supported by the NDP).

Say Oopsy, I’m sorry, here’s $100, now let’s get back to business

  7. Pedant says:

There are plenty of things I believe should force politicians out (but nearly never do). But a private relationship between consenting adults isn’t one of them. As long as he never harassed her or threatened her job etc, then what he does in his private life is his business.

    • Pedant,

Tory is old school. He believes in contrition, political accountability and genuine regret. He also believes in living up to his responsibilities to the voters who elected him. That other guy…

      • The Doctor says:

I’m with Pedant on this one. I’ve never seen a problem with consensual relationships that originate at work, as long as there’s no harassment, coercion, favouritism etc. A lot of the prohibitions out there are stupid and cast way too wide a net. Check out the numbers – many of us spend more time in the course of our lifetimes at our workplaces than anywhere else. It’s not easy to meet potential mates. And online dating is a cesspool of phoniness and dishonesty.

  8. Robert White says:

The problem with human beings is that they’re human beings always prone to errors. Too bad we can’t send all the politicians on David Letterman’s Late Night with Letterman for the Stupid Human Tricks episodes.

I’m pleased that the Star outed him for the transgressions.

The sad thing is that’s it’s a betrayal to everyone except people from France & Sigmund Freud.

I’ve got a dynamite zinger loaded up to describe this situation…. but I like to think of this as a family values type of website…. so I’ll keep it between me and the guys at the end of the bar.

  10. Peter Williams says:

Perhaps John Tory could run for the Ontario Liberal leadership. Seems he’d fit right in.

  11. Martin Dixon says:

ROTFLMAO at the Toronto Daily Star’s ridiculous “editorial” on Tory. It looked like an Onion bit. Sorry, to whomever wrote that nonsense, given the support he is receiving except from the usual suspects, Tory will not be only remembered for this mistake. It wouldn’t even rank in the top 10 of JT’s nonsensical antics and yet this “newspaper” keeps enabling and giving him pass after pass.

  12. Pipes says:

My guess is that this was the worst kept secret at City Hall and their marriage was over months, if not years ago. Anyone who has suffered from the betrayal of a loved one will know the depth of that despair and its irreconcilable.
I don’t think this is atonable, he will carry his guilt for the rest of his life and his loved ones will have to bear the embarrassment, loss and humiliation for the rest of theirs and it will follow future generations.
I guess frailty is part of the human condition, but his actions were so reckless and the consequences so grave.

    • Sean says:

on the other hand… shit happens!

    • Pipes,

Well said. When a marriage flounders for whatever reason, be quick about it and divorce. Don’t stay together for appearance sake. It’s bad enough to realize you are living a lie. It’s infinitely worse to delude yourself and continue that sham of a marriage.

  13. Martin Dixon says:

The Toronto Daily Star is sure patting themselves on the back in today’s paper for their “scoop”. Laughable given the rumoured shenanigans in Ottawa.

    • Martin,

The Star has opened the flood gates by doing this. Guess who in Ottawa more than likely will be next but by conservative-leaning media.

      • Martin Dixon says:

And now P and P is giving time tonight to the Junior Jimmy Olsen from the Toronto Daily Star that “broke” this “story”. If you believe his rationalization, someone needs to do a lot of work in Ottawa given the rumours about similar power imbalance situations up there.

  14. Peter Seville says:

NEVER let the little head do the thinking.

  15. Martin Dixon says:

Freeland weighing in. That is hilarious given all the nonsense going on around her.

    https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/john-tory-resigning-as-toronto-mayor-after-affair-the-right-thing-to-do-freeland-1.6274907

At least it would appear(from the article) that JT(read PMO) was smart enough to duck the question. That would been even more hilarious.

Tim Powers pointed out on P and P that no one in NFLD actually gives a shit about this story. I have a friend in Vancouver who tells me all the time about how no one out there cares when Toronto IS ABOUT to get a couple of inches of snow but it is always at the top of the CBC news.

    • Martin,

That so-called opinion tells you all you could possibly want to know about Freeland. I’ll leave it at that. Of course, these people will enlighten us on HimselfTM…eventually, but only in their next “best-seller”. Next.
