Well, being indigenous or aboriginal is like being a lawyer. Both are based on absolutes: for the former on blood lines and the latter, the Bar exam. Advocates, more often than not can do a world of good but that doesn’t make them indigenous, aboriginal or lawyers.
You can identify as part of a given group or even feel you’re part of one but reality doesn’t make it so.
