KINSELLACAST 364: Ottawa’s secret BFFs with Lilley, Kheiriddin, Mraz, Belanger, Mulroney plus guitar songs I like

  1. Warren,

Now you know why there are so many mindless partisans in our parties. This is proof of that. However, some well-known exceptions exist, namely, the so-called relationship between the most recent former prime minister and the former opposition leader. They hate each other’s guts.

  2. Warren,

The fix is in. March 2026. What a joke. Pierre is staying as regrettable as that is. Won’t waste my time trying to get rid of him. I’ll just get the last and best laugh when we lose again in the next fall or spring election. We love to be LOSERS. It’s a badge of honour for us…

    • Douglas+W says:

      Ronald,
My good man. A tad harsh today.
Look, the Liberals should have won 190 seats, and they didn’t.
They have cabinet ministers, who serve up nonsense.
They muffed a parliamentary vote yesterday.
We’re not great. Neither are they.
      Stay calm, and carry on.
      Etc. Etc.

      • Douglas,

Byrne is my non-negotiable line in the sand and the leader crossed it. So now I will keep hitting him as hard and as often as I can until election day. Then I will watch him lose because he definitely will.

Start choosing your leadership candidate now given that the election will be in six to nine months max.

        • Douglas+W says:

          Ronald,
She’ll be gone by early August.
The writ will be dropped just after Thanksgiving.
The funeral director can’t afford to wait until the New Year: no one wants to trot to the polls when the economy is in the crapper

  3. Warren,

Harper sent her back to Ottawa in the last two weeks of the campaign. That’s all you need to know about her strategic abilities. She was the CPC demigod and should wear the loss. Period. And since she won’t, the leader gets to wear it.

If my mother was born in Detroit, she would be a car. That CPC logic for you…bunch of sycophant fools.

  4. Warren,

    Mraz is back!

GoldenDome is bullshit just like Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). All the enemy has to do is overwhelm it with ICBMs, submarine-launched or hypersonic missiles. All the enemy needs is for one nuclear-armed missile to get through and it’s nuclear devastation time.

Same story for a carrier: overwhelm her with missiles and she’s G-O-N-E.

  5. John,

People just kill me with their speculation. Of course, Iran already has at least one deliverable nuclear missile. That’s what the CIA and DIA told Trump. Hence, plenty of diplomatic posturing and threats in Washington, D.C. and Jerusalem. But no attack on nuclear facilities, otherwise it’s a nuke attack on Israel that’s coming next.

  6. Warren,

He’s already got caucus locked up. That’s all he needs. We’re stuck with him and SaintByrneTM…

  7. Warren,

To compare border crossing numbers with fentanyl labs operating in Canada is a false comparison. Apples and oranges. But given that most of the full-time media are lazy and sloppy, only Andrew Chang at CBC has bothered to report on it:

    https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?&q=dea+fentanyl%2flabs%2fcanada&&mid=04AF7E0203AD3DEDF02504AF7E0203AD3DEDF025&&FORM=VRDGAR

His report is corroborated by the RCMP.

  8. Warren,

Parents should have oversight for kids under sixteen. A no-brainer.

  9. Warren,

Joly. Agree with you. It was rather telling.

  10. Martin Dixon says:

Talking about Carney’s misogyny almost seems quaint given Ukraine’s operation in Russia yesterday. It would have been interesting to hear Mraz’s views on how Putin will react. Thinking the Doomsday Clock should likely be moved from 89 seconds? I am actually surprised there is not more coverage today.

    • Martin Dixon says:

Looks like I am not the only one wondering why the fuck this is not big news right now. Matt Taibbi:

‘I don’t understand how the Ukraine situation isn’t the leading story everywhere in the world. Incredible paucity of information about what is going on behind the scenes around a potentially apocalyptic event.

      • The Doctor says:

Matt Taibbi: the guy who swore up and down in early 2022 that there was no way Russia would invade Ukraine, it was all anti-Russian hysteria, and anyone suggesting that Russia would invade Ukraine was guilty of “Russophobia”.

That Matt Taibbi? Mr. Credibility Himself?

        • Martin Dixon says:

And? That changes his point how? You don’t think it is odd that there is basically no coverage about this and that we have a serious problem? MSNBC is basically joking about it. You want to post gotcha posts while the whole world could go for a shit? Here, let me quote someone who knows way more about the risks here than you seem to, John Mraz, when he posted this podcast on his twitter feed.

“Didn’t have a chance to discuss the Ukrainian attacks today across Russia. A new danger point. Fate help us all.”

          • Martin,

The only saving grace is that most of his ICBMs are inoperable. However, the two other legs of the triad are still deployable: subs and bombers. But bombers not so much, thanks to Ukraine. It was a master stroke.

          • The Doctor says:

Anybody who’s been following Kremlin messaging (and that of its shills like Taibbi and Russian bots on social media) knows that it’s been a consistent Kremlin talking point to play up the threat of Putin going nuclear. Fact.

I’m sorry you don’t like my comment, but Taibbi has in some cases basically operated like a partisan hack masquerading as a journalist. Clearly what he said in early 2022 about the Ukraine war was idiotic and should seriously wonder about whether he’s nothing but a shill for Russia. I don’t see how you can possibly dispute that.

Taibbi’s conduct during the so-called Twitter files thing was less than stellar. Some of his reporting and tweets were proven to be wrong. That is a proven fact.

He has consistently airbrushed the Russian Government’s interference in the 2026 Presidential Election, despite the fact that the REPUBLICAN-CONTROLLED Senate Intelligence Committee’s Report on Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election clearly concluded that such interference occurred and that in some cases it was facilitated and welcomed by the Trump Campaign.

So yeah, anytime someone quotes Taibbi as some source of respected authority, I’m not receptive. I think my reasons are quite solid for having that opinion of the guy.

          • Martin Dixon says:

Again, you did not respond to the main point. He and Mraz seem to be on the same page. Anyone who doesn’t realize that a cornered Putin might go nuclear is naive. Taibbi also took responsibility for his error in 2022 and explained his reasoning. I am not sure what your gold standard is for a journalist but he is certainly no worse than most folks in the profession. They basically delivered a Trump win twice(first by dismissing him and then by propping up Biden) and, just for the record, like me, Taibbi knew that T was on to something in 2016.

          • Warren says:

I wish we had the power you think we do.

          • Martin,

As a sociopath, Putin could indeed go nuclear but his individual sense of preservation will likely prevent that. And besides, the American Ohio-class subs are so quiet that they are practically undetectable. In addition, the British Vanguard-class and French Triomphant-class are all far superior to the Russian boats. In short, any or all of these classes could single-handedly wipe most of Russia off the face of the Earth.

          • The Doctor says:

A cornered Putin might go nuclear. Possible, yes. Likely, no. And the Sun might go supernova tomorrow. Putin would be so fucked if he went there. And even if he “went nuclear” it would likely be a tactical nuke, not a full ICBM launch, which would be guaranteed suicide. Most people do not understand what a tactical nuke is. And if Putin launched a tactical nuke, that would be a severe propaganda loss for Russia. And one thing Putin does care about a lot is the propaganda war, he and his bots are furiously on that like flies on shit 24/7.

If our standard for dealing with Putin is “we have to give him what he wants, otherwise he might go nuclear”, then why don’t we just drop our pants now and give him all of Europe?

          • Doc,

Many in the West don’t understand that there is no sense of gradation on a nuclear scale. A tactical nuke would provoke from NATO the same end result as an ICBM, air or sub attack. In short, if Putin goes nuclear in any capacity, the collective national security interest of NATO would ensure a robust nuclear response. MAD would be the order of the day, but with greater losses in Russia than in NATO countries. However, that is beside the point.

          • Martin Dixon says:

Again, it is the lack of serious discussion about what happened and the potential consequences as opposed to the giggling on MSNBC and other places like that because they get to own Trump.

  11. Martin Dixon says:

Regarding Tasha’s analysis, my take, for what it is worth. I am one of those volunteers and have been for 20 years. Although this go around, I raised a bunch of money in December but could get no one to focus during the writ period(the best time to raise money-100k should be a slam dunk). Normally I will still help those who don’t want to help themselves but it was tax season so I decided, fuck it but I digress. Anyway, been thinking about this a lot. Ronald won’t agree with this analysis, but this was an unbeatable perfect storm and I don’t think that even the most brilliant campaign manager could have pulled this off. Go ahead and fire Byrne if you want but this was not her fault. Once Trump won(which the Liberals secretly cheered but, again, I digress), we were screwed. We could control nothing after that other than our message which I will get to. Ford won easily and for someone like Kory to break his arm patting himself on the back for that victory is actually quite hilarious. Ford benefited from the Trump win, ginned up the “crisis”(which I still maintain is overrated) and he won easily. I could have run his campaign. Pierre got 2.4 million more votes than the Tories did in 2021. And he had a really big tent including the NDP types who work in the private sector-see Windsor. The premise is that he should have been able to increase that vote share. That vote share got him 7.47 per cent more in the popular vote and 24 more seats and he made grounds in Ontario plus held off what all the Liberal insiders thought would be a majority. As the night wore on, I was actually relieved. So where else does he gain ground without alienating anyone in his current coalition(because he can’t lose any of them). Some say he should have cozied up to Ford but many think he is actually a Liberal so would that have really worked? It is virtually impossible to have a message that can appeal to the ridiculous Rosedale types and flyover country. Hell, they would likely lose my vote if we could somehow could satisfy them. They are literally contrarian indicators. The bottom line is that it is very difficult to persuade voters to change horses during a “crisis” and the Liberals played that “crisis” so well that they managed to persuade the NDP to vote against their own best interests and their vote share dropped 11.53% which is more than what the Liberals gained. Once they realize they have been screwed(the seven remaining NDP MPs already know that and I don’t think they will be as co-operative with the Liberals as folks think), we will be back to regular programming. On the flip side, if Carney engineers his own downfall, where will he get the new voters from? He already has most of the NDP and the Tories are likely more motivated than they were before.

    • Martin,

The Trump analysis falls apart after November 5th when Trump was elected. Between that date and January 20th, were the Liberals already leading in the polls? In short, No. Trudeau announced he would resign in January. Most polls only turned in late February or March. So…it was after the resignation announcement that most poll respondents decided that they didn’t want Pierre after all, meaning Trump had nothing to do with it. They said let’s see, who do we want, anyone but Pierre or Pierre? To ask the question is to answer it as of late February. So, Pierre blew it all by himself. And then he and SaintByrneTM finished us off with their deliberate political strategy in the campaign. The buck stops on Pierre’s desk whether he likes it or not. He prefers to cover for Byrne. They will both stay and then we will lose again. Imagine that…

      • Martin Dixon says:

But how does he tweak his message to get that extra 2 per cent or so to win. It needs to be a message that can win over the ridiculous Rideau Club and Rosedale Golf Club types and still win Kitchener South-Hespeler(we won by 1.7% in a riding that has never gone conservative). They wouldn’t even let a guy like him serve them their brandy snifters:

        https://x.com/strauss_matt/status/1929870242081124526

Check him out. Trust me, you won’t like him.

        • Martin,

He doesn’t want to tweak his message. Byrne’s continued presence in his inner circle is proof enough of that. He’s fine with losing again. I’m not.

          • Martin Dixon says:

Ronald, the point is what is the tweak that will get him that 2 per cent and won’t cost him anyone else.

          • Martin,

Dropping close down CBC, dropping being anti-woke, dropping being anti-foreign aid. All of the above for starters.

          • The Doctor says:

The defund the CBC thing basically meant that for a lot of urban, professional educated voters, supporting the Conservatives was a non-starter. What they call in dating world a deal-breaker. It is a stupid as fuck idea that only appeals to people who are already in the bag for the CPC.

And it’s emblematic of what is wrong with political parties in the age of the internet and social media: they are stacked with partisans who live in partisan information and commentary silos. Thus they spend all day listening to partisan dipshits and very little time listening to people outside of that circle. What I call normal people.

  12. Martin,

Is Putin crazy enough to enlarge the war? You bet he is.

    • Martin Dixon says:

Yes. the world as we know it will be non existent but, on the bright side, we get to own Trump! I am at the cottage but thinking that the Bruce Nuclear Plant is likely a target,

  13. Curious V says:

    Go Oilers!!!!!!

  14. Curious V says:

Carney is doing a good job – the job we hired him to do.

    • Martin Dixon says:

What has he done precisely? His shenanigans, giggling and ducking questions in QP actually diminish him. Just another non serious pol who is ignoring the will of the house that voted on a majority basis(MPs that represent 57 per cent of the country) to present a spring budget.

    • Curious,

Yeah, the Liberals do inconsequential and inadequate better than any other federal party I know…Carney is certainly not a disappointment. He doesn’t live up to his billing, you know, that bill of goods.

    • Gilbert says:

Can you give specific examples? Has he chosen an excellent cabinet? Has he eliminated provincial trade barriers? Has he negotiated trade agreements? Has he attracted lots of investment? Has he presented a budget?

  15. Warren,

Those Paramount+ e-mails just keep rolling in.

    What a pathetic D-I-C-K-W-A-D!

    LOL.
