Music first. Azro Cady track a banger. Social Distortion/Mike Ness vibe. Or Weakerthans:

    Ditto To Be Astronauts.

Black Sabbath could have written that.

  2. Martin Dixon says:

I had forgotten how close that 1997 election was. Didn’t live and breathe politics then. Perhaps because adults were in charge. Plus it was basically impossible to elect a conservative at any level of government in Brantford back then.

Once Carney starts to cut the bureaucracy, NDP types will go back home. Sean mentioned on another thread about how crazy the NDP support was in some ridings and how it won’t be duplicated. I saw some one hit wonder named Corey Hogan flossing about the fact that an office got opened on the CBC the other day. Does anyone really think he is going to be able to duplicate this result? I don’t:

    Liberal Corey Hogan 33,077 48.09 +20.20
    Conservative Jeremy Nixon 31,829 46.27 +0.58
    New Democratic Keira Gunn 2,837 4.12 –13.60

    • Curious v says:

If you run Poilievre again the NDP support will in fact be duplicated, if you run a progressive conservative then the game changes.

      • Martin Dixon says:

        Nonsense.

        • Martin,

I love Nanos. It confirms my argument that working-class people are ditching the CPC (at 34%) and returning to the NDP (at 11%), while the LPC (44%) number holds steady. Can’t wait for that spring election when PP will finally be shown the door as leader. That will be a very good day!

          • Douglas+W says:

            Ronald,
Nanos? His polls only hover around 1,000 respondents.
The bare minimum for a national poll to have any credibility is 1,250.
A decent national poll is around 1,500
A super strong national poll, generating a reasonably strong snapshot of the political landscape, is 1,700.
Abacus Data had 1,915 in its most recent national poll.
This is why the Abacus poll deserves serious attention

          • Curious v says:

The party that offers working class people the least is the CPC. A healthy diet of anti-woke commentary and conspiracy theory, but nothing for working people that would actually benefit their lives.

          • Douglas,

I’m not a disciple of sample size, but I take your point, which is credible. However, when I see fifteen polls going one way and two the other, I will go with the plurality of polls. But it goes without saying that the fifteen could be wrong and two others right. At minimum, theoretically speaking.

        • Martin Dixon says:

My portfolio since 2015 thanks you for your naïveté Curious. Elbows up! I have tried to save folks from themselves since then but, at my age, I am now just enjoying the ride.

  3. Warren,

I’ve spent the better part of almost two years thinking about October 7, 2023, and the more I work through it, the more I distance myself from the theory of a catastrophic cascading massive intelligence failure. I can’t buy that. In my book, there remains another shoe to drop, and that shoe has Netanyahu written all over it. We need to find out much more about this tragedy and how it really happened.

  4. Warren,

Yeah, Revenue Canada, where the phone wait has always been between one and two hours. That should work out great after the cuts…

  5. Warren,

Home invasion: the devil is always in the details.

  6. Warren,

When moron Trump cancelled Abbas’ visa, he almost guaranteed that the General Assembly will adopt a resolution on Palestinian statehood, which Trump will veto. Then the UK, France and Canada will go ahead with it anyway.

  7. Warren,

Did they bring out the torches and pitchforks when Chrétien cut the public service? Nope. Martin? Only eventually. Carney? When they look at the alternative, they’ll likely give Carney a pass in the next election.

  8. Warren,

Of course, those who happen to be hypocrites in the West and elsewhere never have a word to say about our asshole telling CPC MPs not to work for Ford and the Progressive Conservatives in their election. In short, Skippy started it. No surprise there.

  9. Warren,

When Ford goes to sleep at night, he puts his head on a pillow and probably can hear Canada calling for far better government than we have now. There’s the rationale right there. Hopefully, Kory is telling him the same thing.

    • Gilbert says:

The traitorous, arrogant, ambitious, simple-minded and very emotional Doug Ford will never get my vote. I’m sure he’d love to be leader of the CPC, but he’s made many enemies.

      • Gilbert,

Fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But if you want to come off as credible, you should also address this part:

“Of course, those who happen to be hypocrites in the West and elsewhere never have a word to say about our asshole telling CPC MPs not to work for Ford and the Progressive Conservatives in their election. In short, Skippy started it. No surprise there.”

If you’re going to label Ford as traitorous, then you have to label Pierre the same way since HE started it. How I admire the handful of CPC MPs who told the leader to go fuck himself and helped Ford in the election anyway. My respects. PP is such a classless loser…

        • Gilbert says:

I can’t talk about the Progressive Conservatives in their election because I don’t have enough information. According to my information, Mr. Ford dismissed Ms. Byrne from a previous campaign, so it’s likely that she and Mr. Ford are not very fond of one another. Perhaps Mr. Ford and Mr. Poilievre have never been particularly close. In my opinion, they don’t have to be best friends, but as far as I know, Mr. Poilievre never attempted to sabotage Mr. Ford’s campaign to the extent that Mr. Ford attempted to sabotage Mr. Poilievre’s. At the very least, it showed me two things: Mr. Ford doesn’t know the meaning of the word loyalty, and he understands nothing about being diplomatic and keeping sensitive discussions private.

          • Martin Dixon says:

Ford fired the first shot my calling a really really early election. And Kory is not popular with the caucus because he believes his own press releases.

          • Gilbert,

I knew Ford had something in common with Harper: good strategic judgment when the strategist ain’t worth two shits.

As for the rest of the story, hopefully another Conservative supporter or member will rise to the occasion and fill in the blanks for both of us.

          • I find this to be really telling:

            “[…]to the extent […] ”

In short, Pierre is in no way akin to Caesar’s wife. I rest my case. Well, at least Charest is probably getting a good laugh ever since PP royally blew it in the election. And trust me, he’ll do it again next time!

          • Martin Dixon says:

Plus Ford did look like a dumbass dumping out that Crown Royal and a lot of folks in Gimli, Manitoba wold like a word.

          • Martin,

The Crown Royal thing came off perhaps as over the top but personally I loved it. If only I could pour down the drain the unsuitable aspects related to the CPC. LOL.

        • Curious v says:

The party that offers working class people the least is the CPC. A healthy diet of anti-woke commentary and conspiracy theory, but nothing for working people that would actually benefit their lives.

  10. Hey Pedant,

Too bad I no longer click on that flood of e-mails that I’ve been receiving since the leadership race. LOL. At least it keeps you busy. You know what they say about idle hands…

  11. Martin Dixon says:

Gee, I did not see that coming:

“Power utility TransAlta Corp. thoroughly investigated other options before signing a $750-million investment deal with Brookfield Renewable Partners and there is no reason to seek to cancel it, says CEO Dawn Farrell.”

    https://globalnews.ca/news/5100346/transalta-brookfield-investment-deal-2019/

  12. Martin Dixon says:

And apropos of nothing, when Dawn took over TA, it was trading at 21.80. When she left, it was at 11.80.

  13. Warren,

    From The New York Times:

“Belgium will recognize a Palestinian state at this month’s United Nations General Assembly, the country’s foreign minister announced early on Tuesday, joining a number of other states in a push intended to pressure Israel over its war on Gaza.

Palestine will be “clearly a state fully recognized on the international stage by Belgium,” the foreign minister, Maxime Prévot, said on social media, though that recognition would take full effect only if key conditions were met.

The “formalization” of the move will take place “once the last hostage has been released and Hamas no longer has any role in managing Palestine,” Mr. Prévot said. It would come by royal decree, he added.”

The Belgian position, which I favour, will in the end amount to the status quo because both preliminary conditions will likely never occur.

  14. Warren,

    From The Jerusalem Post:

“Netanyahu to hold talks over West Bank annexation in response to Palestinian state recognition”

This fucker has to go. That’s all we need turning Fatah into an explicit ally of terrorists. And how would that enhance Israel’s national and physical security?

  15. Martin Dixon says:

Just watched Carney say that when he “talks to businesses across the country(ESPECIALLY IN QUEBEC), their first issue is Tariffs and the second is TFW.”

I call bullshit. But he sure looked convincing so the Elbows Up crowd will buy it.

  16. Martin Dixon says:

Random thought of the day. Can you imagine if Pierre had a grip and grin with the head of The Heritage Foundation? Cabinet should ask him for his views on the TFW program but I digress.

    • Martin,

Carney is an idiot but at least it’s one step up from being an asshole. Even shit face Trump has tried publicly to distance himself from Project 2025…

      Hello…clueless Prime Minister!

And Curious, let’s see you try to defend this bonehead play.

  17. Here comes loads of more NDP votes from women.

    • Gilbert says:

Sean Fraser has to be the worst cabinet minister of all time with the possible exception of Melanie Joly. If Mr. Carney is so intelligent, why does he pick such cabinet ministers?

      • Martin Dixon says:

Because, to him, they are the equivalent of a private sector board. Show up for a couple of meetings a year for show but they don’t really bring anything to the table.

        • Martin,

Agreed. The larger the company in the private sector, the higher the percentage of incompetence and grifting. Read 2008 financial crisis and just wait for the one that’s around the corner.

          • Martin Dixon says:

Carney keeps sending out Joly to speak on behalf of the government and, try as I might, I just can’t follow what she is talking about.

        • Gilbert,

Most cabinets have a plurality of duds regardless of party, but this government is stuck with Trudeau remnants that were largely incompetent on Day One and still are.

And the other thing is that Carney is finally showing his true colours: bought and paid for by big business and special interests. Removing the EV mandate coupled with the carbon tax climbdown is absolute proof of that.

        • Martin,

Carney is no Red-Pink or even Blue Liberal. He sure ain’t a Progressive Conservative either. He’s a Big Business Liberal, enthusiastically serving large corporations and various multinationals.

Women of Canada, how you have been played…

      • But at least Carney isn’t a dickhead.

  18. Martin Dixon says:

Headline from the NP today. Replace Carney with Poilievre and imagine how apoplectic the usual suspects would be(including a couple on this site). They would be claiming that Pierre will literally leave people to die in the street. And now they are forgetting it was THEIR boy that created this mess. Liberals are so cute!

“Carney’s cabinet retreat brings ‘tough’ budget decisions, tariff relief and calls for a ‘diet’ government”

  19. Warren,

Angus Reid is huge in sample size but the more you dig in as a CPC member or supporter, the less you like it. Details to follow later today.

  20. Martin Dixon says:

Two conflicting headlines in the last 24 hours:

“The eight mining projects on the list include the Teck Strategic Minerals Initiative and the Red Chris Copper and Gold Mine expansion in B.C.; Saskatchewan’s Foran McIlvenna Bay and Rook Uranium projects; the Minago Nickel Project in Manitoba; the Crawford Nickel Project and the Ring of Fire in Ontario; and the Strange Lake Torngat Metals Ltd. rare earths mine in Quebec.”

    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-32-potential-infrastructure-projects-government-list-oil-pipeline/

“Northern Ontario First Nations are building a village in the path to the Ring of Fire”

    https://www.sudbury.com/around-the-north/northern-ontario-first-nations-are-building-a-village-in-the-path-to-the-ring-of-fire-11164317

The group building the village are basically funded by the Sierra Club.

  21. Warren,

For those of you who are already getting rich in this sector: Teck Resources, Newmont, Imperial Metals, Foran, NexGen and Canada Nickel. I own the last two names.

  22. Curious v says:

I know this is off topic, but I want to bring attention to the UCP government in Alberta’s treatment of Aish recipients – they’re cutting benefits back 200 bucks, at the same time they’re increasing rent in subsidized rental units by 200 dollars – this government is attacking the most vulnerable Albertans in the midst of an affordability crisis. Worse still, they’re clawing back income at 350, so
People with disabilities can’t even work
Their way out of poverty – I think this should get national attention and governments that don’t care for their disabled population should be shamed and ashamed of themselves – what a disgrace to attack the weakest and most vulnerable in the richest province in Canada –

  23. Curious v says:

I want to bring national attention to the treatment of disabled people – what they need is a guaranteed income and a health plan so they can pursue work to the best of their ability. The Alberta government is cuttting them back which will cause severe consequences for their health, and offering disincentives to work, with clawbacks starting at 350 of income – what the fuck is wrong with Alberta and Canada – what a disgrace

  24. Curious v says:

When I was recovering from chemotherapy I volunteered at a not for profit for people with mental health challenges – this UCP government is causing severe harm
To this community, and they are particularly vulnerable – like bullies stealing a kids lunch money – it is unforgivable what they are proposing to do.

  25. Curious v says:

Danielle smith and her UCP government are the woest in Canada – what a disgrace.

  26. Curious v says:

Danielle smith and her UCP government are the worst in Canada – what a disgrace.

    • Martin Dixon says:

SDS is actually a thing and, yet, she is queen for a day because she was on board with Carney on an issue. Literally every single thing that comes out of her mouth is an anathema to the left. Every single thing. They even twisted themselves into a pretzel defending the rights of children to be exposed to graphic pictorial pornography. Until a day like yesterday. “I think Danielle is the second coming of Satan(look down a few posts) but she sure nails it on the major projects issue.”

  27. Curious,

With your obvious posting difficulties, somehow you must be getting obstructive e-mails definitely not coming from the Liberal Party of Canada.

As for Danielle Smith…her only moment of clarity was concerning the Edmonton Public School Board. A first, for her.

    • Curious v says:

Ronald, they’re cutting their income back 200 bucks, and clawing back employment income at 350 – they gave everybody else a tax break – they’re also increasing rent for subsidized renters (people with disabilities) increasing their rent 200 and cutting their benefits back 200 – all to give all those folks who aren’t vulnerable a tax break – the UCP is an ideologically motivated disaster and I pray they’ll lose the next election. They’ll burn in hell for what they’re doing. Never understood why religious folks would vote for Satan.

    • Curious v says:

Good stuff Ronald – now get all your PC pals in Alberta to tell smith to back off in the Aish cuts

Realize that people who work on Aish don’t have access to subsidized housing, so they’re paying market rent. You want them bouncing around room rentals with ptsd, schizophrenia, or maybe autism, or maybe they’re bipolar – they’re abusing these people instead of protecting them and making sure they have a secure life so they can function.

  28. Curious v says:

Well, Ronald, Alberta had a system they could be proud of. Not perfect, but it was forward thinking in that it offered a decent amount and the opportunity to work to increase your lot. Now they’re clawing back wages after 350, cutting the benefit by 200 and increasing rent by 200 – this is a disgrace. The people I know from volunteering are wonderful, but they have severe disabilities. They can’t work, they have a hard time just getting through everyday life – some
Are more capable than others but they’re all vulnerable, and vulnerable people depend on leaders to stick up for them, to protect them. This government is doing the opposite – they’re attacking the most vulnerable and taking away the only thing they could count on. It’s going to exacerbate disabilities, might even cause suicides. The person who attacks the folks I met is a sick person who is unfit to lead, and that’s precisely what Danielle smith has done. It’s telling to me when a leader doesn’t take the life and well being of disabled people seriously, or sees them as an easy way to save a buck – since they aren’t able to defend themselves. Can you imagine a teacher or civil servant being treated this way ?- the only reason they attack vulnerable people is that they assume the vulnerable can’t fight back – they depend on others to fight for them. This government is going to burn in hell – Danielle smith is the worst premier in Canada
