Truth and reconciliation

On Truth and Reconciliation day – as a Dad to an Indigenous girl – I say to residential school deniers: stop with your sophistry about graves. Stop. Thousands of Indigenous kids were taken from their parents and terribly abused. That’s the truth. So, reconcile.

  1. Warren,

Let’s call a spade a spade: it was in addition to multidimensional forms of abuse an environment where deliberate neglect and starvation led to countless deaths. At some instructions, children and adolescents were killed as a problem-solving mechanism. This type of intergenerational trauma does not get healed quickly. This is at least a fifty year effort of support and psychological recovery. As a society, thus far we have barely skimmed the surface of this collective indignity and inhumanity. So much essential work lies ahead to begin a genuine healing process for survivors. We truly are at last on a mission from God to help heal our neighbors. May we make the most of it.
