Alberta and BC have no jurisdiction over pipelines, period. Ottawa can force a pipeline to the West Coast, but it never will because there goes Carney’s BC seats. Eby needs to go with popular sovereignty. Let the people of BC speak and then abide by the result. And as a newsflash for Smith, if you win a referendum in BC, use your brain and agree to royalties being paid to BC. Otherwise, you are fucked and will stay fucked permanently. Show BC the money if they approve of a northern pipeline in a referendum. See how easy that is?
I’m all for the Feds building pipelines but they should own them permanently and pay royalties to the provinces they cross

As a lifelong Conservative, I will give props to Carney not on the jobs side, but on the criminal justice side. His proposed changes to the criminal justice system are what we desperately need – especially here in Winnipeg where crimes (and especially repeat violent offenses) are completely out of control.
We will see what details are announced next week, but hopefully it involves major toughening of bail requirements; major lengthening of jail sentences; and major reductions in the number of silly bleeding-heart excuses that are baked into our current so-called “justice system”.
If Carney can do something to keep criminals (all criminals) in jail for a whole lot longer, he might swing my vote.

Got to peel back the layers on this one: some are for three violent offences in a row and boom while others are for three offences, of which one is violent and boom. I’m a bleeding heart progressive but am part of the second group. Nationally, crime continues to drop in most localities but in some cities it’s the opposite.
Contrast that with the Americans abandoning mandatory minimums in several states for budgetary reasons: too many inmates, not enough prisons and it was costing a fortune to build new ones.
Contrast that with governments who love to encourage repeat offenders. To my knowledge, there are no vocational or training programs while in prison so guess what immediately happens when an inmate is released. Duh, governments are stupid and will remain stupid forever.
Finally, as most of you know, Carney’s policy is just another example of his government stealing CPC policies.
Crime, though, is born of the society it exists in. If, like Ronald says, we don’t have job training, or vocational programs in the slammer – and we tell them they can’t even work basic jobs because of their record, well what do you expect? Loading prisons isn’t a good thing, and giving them a chance to live a decent life is an important, and vital part of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is the only option because we can’t lock everybody up for life, just for a mistake they made in their youth – how stupid and cruel is that? I agree that violent offenders need different treatment, but we have to give people a chance to remake themselves or they’ll keep offending – because we aren’t giving them a choice. I understand in politics root causes of crime aren’t the best talking point, but they are the most important point, and helping people back into functioning lives in society is the best option.
Poilievre just copies the Americans because that’s the kind of bullshit his base is fed through the propaganda they consume. He does this with his use of “woke” as a talking point. His recent attacks on DEI, that he wants to weaponize the police to attack liberals – he’s a copy cat of Trump – it’s disgusting that Canadian Politicians stoop this low.
