Let me get this straight

Harper claims he is all-Canadian, and Ignatieff isn’t.  Harper uses – and shamelessly copies – an American politician’s commercial to communicate how Canadian he is.  Font, music, creative approach, even the script.

I’m late to the party on this one, but Lopinski made me watch it.  Amazing – and not in a good way.

and then there is Iggy matching an Obama ad campaign
remember the glass house from earlier this week

all the parties are slinging it now…as pitiful as a reality show

  2. TDotRome says:

Do you have links to the American & Harper commercials? Would love to see them side by each.

Btw, I was watching P&P today and they had a Flaherty interview off the top. Solomon asked about the 80,000 potential retirees to help balance the budget a year early. Flaherty responded with something like, ‘I don’t know where you got that number from but it isn’t right and that person is nuts/foolish/insane’…….pretty sure the person who said “80,000” was Stephen Harper!

    Shameful. Absolutely shameful.

  4. George says:

“(coyne tweet) glen_mcgregor Awish Alam, UWO student from Harper rally fame, confirms she was an NDP volunteer in the last election. Deets to follow.”
looks like this isn’t going away any time soon

    • catherine says:

Is there some point to her being an NDP volunteer? The Ignatieff rally I was at recently had people wearing NDP and Conservative buttons and some of the Conservatives I talked to at an earlier one were very involved in the party. Some just come to check out the competition or to ask an embarrassing question. Does anyone care about their party affiliation?

    • Namesake says:

I already responded to this yesterday; it doesn’t move the chicken meter one bit.

      • catherine says:

Read it. good response. Difficult to understand what these guys are worried about. Okay, so Harper may be a bit paranoid and afraid of making a misstep – but does that mean his supporters have to act paranoid too.

        • nic coivert says:

          Harper is Nixon, or worse.

          • Paranoid?

When Judy Sgro and John McCullum (who?) show up with picket signs at an election event and Brian Mulroney has to look at some little fat man with short pants waving an American flag at his hanging in parlaiment. I would say be damned careful who you let in to the rally.

It is a good ad, get over it.

I love the 1812 stuff in the platform as it unifies all Canadians and gives us something other than heath care to cheer about.

          • Jan says:

A Nixon wannabe. Despite Nixon’s faults he was smart.

          • JS Rothwell says:

Oh please Fake Keef that ad was schlock. You probably get all patriotic when those Cook Island commercials come on. What does Fake Mick think?

  5. Scott Tribe says:

EVERY political leader is trying to grab the keys to 24 Sussex. It’s a stupid argument.

    • Namesake says:

well, except that ‘the’ argument keeps shifting depending on whose mealy mouth is making it: he didn’t “parachute,” he ran for the leadership, twice… he only get acclaimed the second time because every one else had dropped out or, in Rae’s case, stood aside, given the impending collapse of the gov’t before the weenie prorogued. And he’s now had more experience as an MP and in the Commons & more familiarity with more portfolios than Trudeau had when he became PM.

    • Jamie Rothwell says:

Oh the Tulk tape must be covering the ears today. La la la la I cant hear you la la la!

      • nic coivert says:

        Please.

Harper is claiming Ignatieff is power hungry.

I hope that’s the best you have.

My dog could see through that.

    • smelter rat says:

What a strange world you live in Gord.

  6. Michael Bussiere says:

Isn’t this the bozo who is on the record somewhere as stating he only watches US news? For the quality and depth of coverage, no doubt.

  7. Mike London says:

What about the “Oprah” style budget release party? Oh gawd…

  8. Warren,

This will end in a majority like you said it would.

Can’t we all just sit back and enjoy the crocuses,

    Ipsos said so….as well.

  9. Gord Johnston says:

Harper: He didn’t come to Ottawa for you.

  10. MCBellecourt says:

Hi, Mr. K., I apologize in advance because it’s a bit off topic, but I noticed this today in my local paper and would be interested to know your thoughts on it.

I found it quite sickening and thought you should know about it. Thanks.

  11. Jan says:

Oh God Gord – the clapped out ‘going back to Harvard ‘ meme – I thought that one had died of natural causes. Harper should wish he had somewhere to go back to. The Con party is reduced to a bunch of angry old men who keep repeating themselves.

WK: I thought you might like this Chretien election story. You may have even been there. 😉

  13. Namesake says:

Bah. They’re both corporate shills working for right-wing spin tanks; Clemens used to be with the Fraser Institute; Crowley & his new ‘Macdonald-Laurier Institute’ has been busily embarrassing themselves trying to undermine StatsCan’s crime stats a la the Sun’s Lorrie Goldstein to explain why we need billions of extra prison spaces because of how much better things were in the ’60s.

Here’s the short & sweet on why the ‘sky will fall if we restore the federal corporate income tax rate to last year’s highly competitive 18% rate instead of cutting it to 15%” scenario…

” flies in the face of the facts.

Look at what happened the last time corporate tax cuts were suspended. It was 2005. The governing Liberals shelved that year’s tax reduction in hopes of winning NDP support to keep their minority government alive.

Job creation didn’t plummet. Business investment didn’t dry up. The economy didn’t stop growing. In fact, the consequences were scarcely detectable.

Look at what corporations did with their tax cuts in the 2009 recession. The Conservative government, hoping to blunt the impact of the downturn, went ahead with their third rate reduction.

Businesses laid off thousands of workers, shut down plants and de-invested in productivity. Most used the federal largesse to fatten their cash reserves.”

  14. Re transplanting an American political agenda to Canada, see today’s (Apr. 9) well-researched article by Ian Brown in the Globe & Mail. Harper’s ‘get tough on crime’ agenda will not reduce crime, will cost billions unnecessarily and will make his base swoon. Go figure….All the big brain criminologists say this goofy policy makes no sense at all. But why listen to experts when they don’t give you the answers you want?

Tough on crime = dumb on crime. It costs #322 a day to keep an inmate prisoner in a federal prison. Harper’s mandatory minimums will cause a budget explosion, overcrowding in jails and do nothing to reduce crime rates. See G&M article 09/04 http://tiny.cc/cejbc

I like “tough on crime = dumb on crime”. a gift from me to you

  15. Anne Peterson says:

Nobody could be as desperate for the keys to that place than Harper. When you will lie and manipulate and stoop to anything you are power mad. And the media lets him get away with the lies. Our media has a lot to account for in their poor coverge of conservative lies.

    • MCBellecourt says:

The press are sure giving Harper a free pass as to why the government fell in the first place.

      Shaking my head here.

  16. Oooppsss…that should have been $322 a day to keep an inmate in a federal prison in Canada. mea culpa. I will make a typo donation to the Bart Memorial Trust.

    • MH says:

Much less expensive if you double and triple bunk, like the Liberals want to do.

      • Namesake says:

that’s total crap… Mark Holland has been complaining about the double-bunking all year, but Toews has been saying that they plan to continue doing that even with the expansions.

  17. George says:

Video of Ignatieff making his health announcement in Hamilton…watch the girl on the right in the red dress with the white labcoat on…priceless – one woman behind him actually leaves.

    Peter Kent, Conservative MP, HarperCon Minister – former NBC and Christian Science Monitor (US) foreign correspondent;

    Chris Alexander, Conservative Candidate, former Ambassador to Afghanistan, graduate of Oxford University (UK);

For that matter, let’s see the education and work experiences of the principals of the major corporations filling the Conservative election coffers.

For the love of the Almighty, can somebody please put an end to the HarperCon hypocrisy about Ignatieff’s “elitism” and “Canadian-ness”!!!!
