    Thank. Fucking. God!!!

I had very low hopes for Alabama and the US in general, but I really didn’t want to live in a world that would elect a goddamn racist, backwoods pedophile.

    Also, Donald Trump is finished.

    Jesus.

I’m ecstatic! I thought for sure Moore was going to win. I also bet somewhere, Mitch “Yertle the Turtle” McConnel is secretly thanking his lucky stars he doesn’t have to put up with Moore in the Senate.

Best part is, Trumplethinskin’s gotta be seething over this. His endorsement of Savage in the primary and Moore in the election didn’t mean shit. That’s gotta bruise his overinflated ego.

It makes it harder on McConnel because his small Senate majority got quite a bit smaller and it significantly raises the odds the Democrats will take back the Senate in 2018.

I suspect there are at least a few Republicans in the Senate who are happy as well knowing they won’t have to deal with all the baggage Moore would have brought with him.

Great to see although to be fair had Roy Moore not had the sexual assault allegations or had the GOP chosen Luther Strange I believe they would have held this one. I am pretty sure Trump will carry Alabama in 2020 even if he loses badly nationally as this is one of the reddest states in the union. Nonetheless a GOP loss in a deeply red state is a sign for the GOP that you can only go so far to the right and win even in the most conservative parts of the country.

More importantly this now makes the Democrats taking the senate in 2018 a possibility whereas had Moore won it would have closed that possibility. There are only 8 GOP senators up for re-election while 25 Democrats including some in states that went heavily for Trump so best case scenario for the Democrats is hold the 25 they have (normally impossible, but with Trump’s unpopularity they just might do it) and pick up both Nevada and Arizona (which are the only two I think they have a shot at) and this would give them a narrow 51-49 majority. Unfortunately I suspect Doug Jones will lose his seat in 2020 based on the state’s recent voting history, but there will be enough potential pick ups elsewhere that this will be less of an issue.

    GO BAMA, ROLL TIDE!

  6. Luke says:

Oh my goodness, I saw the voter demographics. Thank you black people in Alabama. And fuck 70% of the white ones and their pro molestation votes.

    • The Doctor says:

Yeah, things like that make me embarrassed to be white.

      • Luke says:

Yes indeed. On the other hand at least as a white male I can choose to not be that way. But the sheer divide between whites and blacks amazes me as a demographic phenomenon. That kind of division does not betray a united society.

  7. Matt says:

Is this where we are in society?

When someone who is an alleged pedophile, thinks America was better when it had slavery, and has been removed from political office TWICE gets beaten in an election it’s considered an upset?

    • The Doctor says:

And, don’t forget, he lost in a squeaker. Still got over 48% of the vote, even with the write-in factor.

    • Miles Lunn says:

In the state of Alabama yes. Nationally and in most states no, but Alabama is a deep red state and has a long history of racism and extreme views so many of us believe that any Republican no matter how vile and extreme will win in Alabama. Had it been most other states what you are saying is correct.

I think there was a bit of hubris at work, especially on Bannon’s part. It was like Bannon got so intoxicated with his ability to successfully spew alt-right hate and propaganda, he came to believe that he could sell just about any far-right candidate, no matter how crazy or execrable the candidate might be. There is a real in-your-face aspect to Bannon’s brand of conservative populism, but there is such a thing as flying to close to the sun. I don’t know if Bannon’s capable of reading the memo though. His whole agenda is so negative and destructive. I agree with the observers who say that Bannon really is a sort of anarchist. He’s not interested in government or governing. It’s all about blowing stuff up.

Great New Yorker cartoon today. Santa sitting in an armchair watching tv news reporting the Doug Jones victory. Says Santa: “How the hell am I supposed to compete with that?”
