Breaking: Trudeau and Scheer adopt same position on abortion

Isn’t it neat how the universe balances itself, sometimes?

  1. the real Sean says:

Both Tories and Grits have dissenters from the official party position on the issues of SSM and abortion. This has been well established going back about 30 years. Leaders on both sides have been inconsistent while Canada experienced major social changes…. Which in fairness actually mirrors the attitudes of many Canadians. Both parties embarrass themselves if they attack the other on these issues. Stones / glass houses etc….

The only difference here is that PM Zoolander’s incompetent team of desperate, frequent losers chose to re-open these wounds… they sense that after all the disappointments, lies and failures, they have nothing left to sell Canadians in their final 7 weeks in the spotlight. The Tories didn’t start this fight because they know better and frankly, they have some class.

    • Walter says:

The big difference is the Liberals raise the issues and the fact that some individuals within the OTHER party have opposing views to be divisive, the CPC raises it to highlight the hypocrisy of the Liberals and the bias of the media.

It was a giant issue for a week to attack Scheer, and as soon as the Trudeau video was released, the media decided the story is over.

  2. Martin says:

I thought this was settled when JFK ran?

  3. J.H. says:

Darn it you’re going to ruin it all. Rachel Curran tried to give us the nod on PnP the other night.
CPC plan is to keep Trudeau, Libs & their media hacks like
CBC News on this BS track throughout campaign, while Canadians are focused on economy, health care and everything else but social value issues, which were long settled.

    • Chris says:

This is what happened in Alberta this spring. The then-Leftist government and its media enthusiasts were too busy demonizing Tories as anti-gay racists and bigots. All kinds of societal ruin was to occur as soon as a Kenney government was elected. These people ignored the economic concerns of the large majority of the population and they paid for it on election day with their thorough drubbing at the polls.

  4. Nick M. says:

Went to Ontario a few months ago and all the outspoken progressive friends couldn’t let it go that Scheer has a personal belief of choosing to be pro-life.

Doesn’t matter that Scheer says that this political issue has been settled and isn’t interested in opening the abortion debate out of the bottle.

It was like wow… there aren’t any social issues in Federal Politics to scare voters with anymore. (As shown by a Harper government not Pursuing any such movements .) And yet the Trudeau brain trust had successfully got the attention of the electorate regarding Scheer over this.

This issue was to be the ticket to get re-elected. Time to hit the reset button on the campaign, I sense the start of 2006 Paul Martin style campaign is being emulated by Team Trudeau.

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Nick,

IMHO, people will decide this election on their opinion of Trudeau and his government’s performance. His PMO is off-track, as usual, stirring up the muck on settled social issues. SETTLED, because they are. Fellow progressives have to stop manufacturing flimsy excuses to re-elect Trudeau. Vote NDP or Green, if you must. Or sit the next one out.

Last time I checked 33% thought this government deserves re-election. Anyone want to put more lipstick on that pig?

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

My bias: I will hold my nose, bring my stomach pump with me in case it becomes necessary, but nevertheless vote CPC just to get Trudeau out. He very much needs to pay the overdue political price for turfing JWR and JP from caucus.

I now have as much affection for him as I always had for Harper. (Not news for anyone reading here.)

        • Walter says:

          Groping a woman was ok?
Breaking the law (13 times) was ok?
It was turfing JWR and JP from Cabinet that was your “line” that was crossed.

      • Douglas W says:

Ronald, Dark economic storm clouds on the distant horizon. If things start to get a wee bit more gloomy, voters are going to ask: who’s best to navigate through tough times? And who will help me out in a crunch without leaving me to tread water? Libs are “seen” as being far more compassionate. That’s why they’ll win. The centre left will gravitate to them, en masse because they believe the Conservatives will cut, cut, cut, just like Doug Ford.

        • Nick M. says:

Trudeau has created such political uncertainty in Alberta, that Foreign Investors have fled. Vanished. Poof. So Trudeau’s Team handling the economy is the problem.

So Compassion you say? He is direct reason Energy East failed to become reality.

I know people selling property in Alberta cuz they think Trudeau is going to win. I have known people who have purchased property, cuz land values are so low and don’t think it can go any lower. I just bought, at a steep discount and am still very nervous if the property will ever be liquid.

Compassion as in extending EI benefits. Yippeee! That’s a Trudeau the solution. More EI when people as just asking for the dignity to work. This PMO is anything but compassionate.

Have you ever been unemployed and on the government dole? Government likes do these things called skills programs. Which are contracted cash grab for someone, I assume party insiders. (It’s criminal actually.) They are so bad, they do a poor job telling you how to write a resume. Then they want to know if you have found work on your own accord so it can be marked down in their success metric.

What could Trudeau possibly do to be so compassionate? Hand Bombardier money without undoing the Dual class structure that is keeping the stock suppressed.

What I have learned about far left governments, is there well intentioned programs do more damage than good. Especially programs that Trudeau creates which exclude people who pay too much tax.

          • Douglas W says:

Nick M., Fair comment concerning Alberta. If his government has done little to help Albertans, how do we know if JT is capable of helping the rest of the country? That said, Liberals remain good at playing the compassionate card, even when they show absolutely no compassion. What’s worse, most people buy into their mantra. Go figure.

          • doconnor says:

You haven’t learned anything about far left governments if you think Trudeau’s is a far left government.

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Nick,

Most of his people are retread Martinites…

      • Fred from BC says:

“Most of his people are retread Martinites…”

The term I always applied to Martin was “hapless”.
He almost had me feeling sorry for him at one point (almost)…

  5. Gail says:

WOW! Trudeau has morals – NO to killing babies

  6. Fred from BC says:

“UT .. and its a big BUT .. that is not my call. My call is ‘answer the bell’ as rung by the woman who is pregnant.. man up and back HER CALL to the hilt.. and .. Yes.. her call is the call jacko.. and if that means getting married.. being dad.. well amen.”

Good for you,. Sal. Most men have difficulty suppressing their masculinity and going totally subservient like that. I know I’ve never been able to master it…just can’t get past the fact that it takes TWO to get pregnant…

  7. Walter says:

You really need to learn how to write in proper English.
(I could even live with French – but not gibberish).

  8. Ronald O'Dowd says:

The one lesson, Dear Reader, you should have learned from Trudeau and Trump:

Qui tacet consentire videtur, ubi loqui debuilt ac potuit.

Don’t ever, ever, remain silent. THEN vote!

    Thank you.

  9. The Doctor says:

I was wondering the same thing. This whole line from Trudeau’s campaign team is something that is already believed by kool-aid drinking Liberal partisans, the old Evil Hidden Agenda thing that the LPC has been trotting out for decades. I suppose though that it’s aimed at minimally engaged non-affiliated moderate/swing voters.

Personally I keep coming back to this: Harper had two terms in which to criminalize abortion and didn’t do it. What is the logical LPC response to that? Oh yeah, that’s right —- there isn’t one.

    • Peter says:

Their response would surely be, “Yes, he didn’t do it, but he would have if he could have. Vote for us to make sure that what he promised wouldn’t happen never does.”

  10. Gord Tulk says:

    Sideshow.

THE issue is the prohibition of market access for the interior west by the LPC and the rest of the left.

That probably 70% of Canadians don’t understand this is about as grave an indictment of this confederation as one can find.

    • Nick M. says:

It’s so true Canadians aren’t aware. Unaware of the foreclosed homes and broken families caused by this government.

People aren’t aware of all the friends who phoned me pleading for a few bucks here and there, at the same time I was unemployed and quickly depleting my own funds. Downturns are common, a 4 year downturn, capital flight when the rest of world has increased their drilling activity only happened once before. It was the NEP.

The thing is, we aren’t asking for a handout. We are asking for the government to quit being obstructionist. Quit destroying investor confidence in Canadian resource sector.

And finally no one in Canada should have to beg a government to stop this behaviour, so we may have the dignity of work. This is a very dark chapter in Canada, and outside of the Prairies it doesn’t even seem to register.

      • doconnor says:

What obstructionist thing has the Liberal government done? The Energy East was supported by them. It was Quebec cross party opposition that got it cancelled.

Other pipelines has been delayed by Court rulings based on the inadequate consultations done by the Conservative government.

        • Nick M. says:

          Hmmm….

After TC Energy invests a billion into the proposal stage… all of a sudden the “new review process for Energy East and said for the first time the environmental assessment will include an examination of the greenhouse gas emissions created at all stages.”

Do you really think the decision to move the goal posts was done without political influence?

          https://business.financialpost.com/pmn/business-pmn/energy-east-pause-puts-liberal-argument-on-environment-and-pipelines-in-question

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

            Nick,

As much as I would argue that Alberta has been far too slow to get on the diversification train — I think you are bang on target with this assessment.

But the real problem is that we’re a federation and as such BC, Quebec and New Brunswick hold a de facto veto over pipeline expansion. So, IMHO, even if Scheer gets in with a majority, how do you unscramble those eggs without losing tons of seats? For Scheer, that REALLY means BC seats.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

The other thing that interests me is to get the perspective of Vancouverois and Miles about the pipeline impact in BC. I wonder how many seats the CPC would likely lose in the event that Scheer pushed through Trans Mountain to Burnaby.

          • Gord Tulk says:

Pushing through the pipeline to Burnaby goes a long way towards saving the country.

        • Gord Tulk says:

Bill 69. The tanker ban. And not doing it’s constitutional duty to get the trans mountain pipeline gong regardless of what the BC govt says.

Let’s see what happens when/if construction begins on the BC aside of the border and like a plague of locusts protesters decend. Anyone think PM trudeau would call in the rcmp and military?

          Me neither.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

            Gord,

I think Ottawa needs to recognize a few things: a) Trudeau has put us in the position of owning Trans Mountain. b) That means he, or his successor, has an iron-clad obligation to get it done. c) To get past the de facto BC government veto, there needs to be a federal binding referendum in Alberta and BC. IF it passes with 50% + 1, then BC has to fold her cards and give way. If not, Horgan must immediately go to the people for a renewed mandate, otherwise he can no longer speak credibly for BC. It’s my sense that re-election will be an uphill battle for him, to say the least.

          • Gord Tulk says:

            Ronald.

Buying the project makes it possible for the LPC to – pardon the pun – bury it – by taking it out of the business limelight.

Again I doubt JT has the cojones to push its construction through -violence is a certainty IMO.

  11. Robert White says:

The age old ‘abortion debate’ is the most laughable old canard in Canadian politics each & every electoral round since the HarpyCONs darken the doorways of Parliament.

Harpy himself stated unequivocally that the Conservative Party would not entertain any debate on the matter whatsoever. The religious right literally regurgitates this religious tripe every electoral round like all the right wing religious zealots do upon Easter every year too.

Abortion is a constitutionally protected Charter Right in Canada. HarpyCONs & Ford Nation know that neither the federal level HarpyCONs or provincial level so-called ‘Progressive Conservatives’ will engage in any sort of debate about ‘abortion’ in Canada, or provincially.

Partisan zealotry sucks but partisan religious zealotry sucks even more, man.

Separation of church & state is key to no debate, ever!

  12. Ronald O'Dowd says:

    Peter,

Their aim is two-fold: to get the one-third of supporters who plan not to support them this time back on board and to get still loyal Liberals to not sit this one out. That’s what has them positively shaking: they have nightmares of getting Hillaryed in Ontario and believe me, it’s coming.

    • Douglas W says:

Ronald, one website projects the Liberals winning 72 Ontario seats; the Conservatives, 43; and the NDP, 5. Sounds about right. I don’t see JT getting Hillaryed in Ontario.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

        Douglas,

One of us is right, the other wrong. Not for me to arrogantly say 100% that I’m right. I will leave a little wiggle room but I remain confident that the polls will underestimate CPC support and far more importantly, momentum. (Let’s also see if NANOS hits another home run.) Trudeau has a track record: some good, some really not good. Actual voters will decide and distribute the egg on our faces accordingly.

        • Douglas W says:

Ronald, I concur: the polls are underestimating the strength of the Conservatives, and I also believe the pollsters’ numbers have not factored in the Conservatives’ ground game: apparently strong in numbers, and flushed with cash. I also wonder how strong the Liberals’ ground game will be? And do their supporters have the same passion as they did in 2015? Finally, the unexpected wild cards: a damaging comment from JW-R or Dr. JP. Something drawn from the V-A Norman case? Something, that reaffirms the ethics (or lack there of) of the Trudeau inner circle. It’s going to be one heck of a heck of a campaign.

        • Fred from BC says:

“Finally, the unexpected wild cards: a damaging comment from JW-R or Dr. JP. Something drawn from the V-A Norman case? ”

I’ve been thinking the same (especially about Norman). But there’s one more potential factor: the Chinese. What if, God forbid, they decided to lash out at Trudeau by executing one of our hostages? Wouldn’t put it past them, not at all.

        • Ronald O'Dowd says:

          Douglas,

JWR has fervently stood behind her limited CC and SCP waiver. I think she needed a more up to date legal opinion. But I digress. In any event, she could only drop a very limited bombshell in the campaign given her up until now respect for those imposed parameters. I don’t see her having the margin for manoeverability that’s required to take Trudeau down with a nuclear blast. But I could be wrong.

        • Ronald O'Dowd says:

          Fred,

I don’t think they would ever execute a CSIS operative or a diplomat. But two of the four are alleged drug dealers. So you could be on to something there. Definitely not good news for them.

        • If thr Chinese did that, it would probably unit the country behind Trudeau. Crisis have that effect.

    • Peter says:

Sure, Ronald, I get that, but what about offsets by people they drive away with such tactics or cause to stay home? I suppose they could try to get folks to vote for them to prevent the Cons from reimposing drawing and quartering, but…..Do you remember Martin’s ad warning how Harper planned to militarize Canadian cities? Worked really well, that one.
