Trudeau shakes the hand of Iran’s foreign minister

Trudeau is having yet another bad week. I actually tore up my liberal membership yesterday and cancelled my donation after many years of drinking the “kool-aid”. So many errors in judgement in so few years.
If the conservatives actually select a leader that’s not a social conservative they may actually get my vote next time. And for me that really is the equivalent of hell freezing over.
    Cheers,
    Chris

  2. Brian says:

Why? Iran is the victim and Canada should stand up for the victim.

    • Paige says:

Yikes! You need to label your comments as sarcasm lest someone accidentally inhales coffee into their sinuses when reading this crap.

  3. the real Sean says:

It’s not an error in judgement…. Because there is no judgement.

  4. PAM LEVY says:

He certainly does not look sad or positively dejected any longer. He just looks like an idiot who thinks this act might work. I agree “this was such a monumental error in judgement”. Appalling.

  5. joe says:

Don’t forget Trudeau bows his head in the video.

Will Trudeau offer Iran any money? He very badly wants a UN Security Council seat and it’s going to take lots of money to get it.

  6. William Morrison says:

“monumental error of judgement.” I dunno…this is simply the kind of guy he is…would you expect him to do anything else? Say something mean and nasty to the guy? Mention dead Canadians? No, that’s not our PM, not at all.

  7. Ronald O'Dowd says:

Frankly, business has been incredibly hectic in the last week so this tragedy has totally fallen off my radar. IMHO, Trudeau’s actions can cut two ways: either it’s indeed appalling given the level of Iranian cooperation, disclosure and lack of accountability and compensation. OR it’s the exact opposite if Iran has handled of late the tragedy honorably and with its best efforts. Only one of these possible scenarios is right. If it’s the latter, Trudeau isn’t in trouble. If it’s the former, then this Prime Minister and his PMO have finally truly foundered.

  8. J.H. says:

Why would anyone be surprised? On this trip He’s been happy to associate himself with an anti-LBGTQ regime & with thugs condemned by Amnesty Int’l, who are accused of war crimes, the disappearance of opposition activists and judicial killings. No surprise that Trudeau woul shake hands with terrorists who kill Canadians.

  9. Fred from BC says:

He’s shameless, isn’t he? Trudeau wants that utterly useless Security Council seat so badly he will do anything to get it. Why? What possibly good can it do us compared to the damage inflicted to our reputation in seeking it?

I’m also trying to figure out exactly why we are trying so hard to acquire the ‘black boxes’ from the downed aircraft…to what end? What specifically do we hope to learn that we don’t already know?

  10. Max says:

Well at least he didn’t “dress up” as Aladdin. So there’s that.

  11. Mike Jeffries says:

Mohammad Javad Zarif has been listed as a terrorist by the U.S. State Department. Either Justin is ignorant of this, doesn’t care, or he is willing to kiss ass in order to get his cherished UN seat.
To all the Canadians families who lost loved ones in the recent Ukraine plane tragedy *this*just proves to me that all of Justin’s posturing of how sad he was during that time was all an act. This is the real Justin.

  12. Douglas W says:

Eventually, the party will turn on him.
They’ll have had enough of his missteps.
For now, caucus members still think he’s alright.

  13. Campbell says:

To be fair, given the goal of Iran’s cooperation that we are trying to achieve, what would you have had him do instead? Turn his back on him? Spit in his face?

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Campbell,

A lot of the Canadians killed in this tragedy were also Iranian citizens. I would look to their relatives and their general reaction before we determine whether this tactic is appropriate or not.

      • Campbell says:

Irrespective of their reactions, I still think that it is more important for the prime minister to take actions that advance our country’s goals in this situation. And so I think the pragmatic approach was justified in this instance, even if many find the optics unappealing. This is more important that mere optics, and I’m pleased that Trudeau saw that too.

        • Fred from BC says:

“I still think that it is more important for the prime minister to take actions that advance our country’s goals in this situation”

Granted, but I think Canadians should also be told what those goals are supposed to be.

  14. Gilbert says:

Most Canadians don’t care about a seat on the UN Security Council.

    • Fred from BC says:

“Most Canadians don’t care about a seat on the UN Security Council.”

And rightly so, since it is completely symbolic and totally useless. It remains to be seen whether Trudeau has condemned, opposed or insulted Israel enough to be considered a reasonable candidate by the several despots and dictators who will make the actual decision.

  15. Ronald O'Dowd says:

Just got off Twitter: hyperbole is always a vote-killing exercise regardless of party. Fortunately, some strategists actually already know that. Ditto for some politicians. I’m exceedingly grateful that cooler heads tend to prevail.

  16. Joseph says:

    Ironic isn’t it?
This is the same guy that was ready to tell off Putin to his face wasn’t he.
Iran downs a plane resulting in Canadians being murdered, and instead of doing what’s right Justin decides getting a photo op is a good idea.
I’ll be charitable, he doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing.
