The twenty-second gap

This clip ran on CNN and MSNBC

  2. Jim R says:

He takes a long pause, and then gives one of his trademark non-answer responses.

  3. Mark D says:

I am often critical of the prime minister, but in this case I am glad he paused to carefully consider both the question, and his response.

Better he pause and risk looking stupid, then say something as our head of government that further ignites the situation in the U.S., at a time when their president is demanding military action against his own citizens.

  4. Gordie_Canuk says:

Without a doubt this is the most intelligent 20 seconds of Trudeau’s public life.

  5. William Morrison says:

did the chip in his brain where he gets directions from Butts malfunction?

  6. Ronald O'Dowd says:

That skate — with a long pause for dramatic effect — gets the gold medal in my book. For a guy who initially didn’t seem to have a clue what to say, he recovered rather nicely, thank you very much.

Yes, this Prime Minister has learned on the job but the question is, has he really learned enough? No comment.

  7. Steve Teller says:

I am not much of a Trudeau fan in general, but I was impressed with the thoughtfulness of this response, as evidenced by the delay. In this sound-byte, Tweet-happy world we live in, it’s good to have someone be willing to consider their answers.

  8. Pipes says:

Humanity happens in the unspoken moments.

He showed his. I give him props. His restraint was admirable.

There is no defuckulator big enough to fix Trump.

  9. Gilbert says:

The prime minister needs to prepare better. He should think of questions that reporters might ask, and give appropriate answers. Here’s how I would have answered. “It is not my role to interfere in American affairs. Let me simply say that all Canadians are sad about recent events in the USA, a great neighbour to Canada, and hope that the situation will be resolved soon.”

  10. Douglas W says:

A performance, worthy of an Oscar.

  11. Max says:

Au contraire!! The PM was very much prepared for that question. The dramatic pause was very contrived…. rehearsed. It came across as inauthentic to me. The Emperor has no clothes.

on an unrelated matter, need I remind everyone that Justin refuses (passes the buck) a federal public inquiry on the WORST mass shooting in Canadian history? It’s underpinnings are RCMP incompetence and violence against women. Right in JT’s wheelhouse, and yet….

  12. Douglas W says:

    Learned on the job?

What little he knows comes naturally: like throwing super smart women (and a Vice Admiral) under the bus.

  13. Mark D says:

Warren, my apologies for continued spamming of your comments’ section with URL’s, but former president George W Bush has just release one of his very rare public statements.

I feel it is timely and well-written, and am grateful for it. However, I would appreciate your professional take as a political communications expert.

  14. I think it is a given that the PM does not do well when he has to go off script. That being said, did the journalist (and considering the question, I use that term loosely) really expect an honest answer? As if the leader of a foreign country is going to weigh in on the actions of the President of the United States, when that country is facing an existential crisis. If they want somebody to call Trump names, why don’t they get Nicolas Maduro on the line. Or better yet, Jagmeet Singh. He seems to be happy to weigh in on all this stuff. At least Scheer has the good sense to keep quiet. Obviously the PM is required to provide a diplomatic answer, and since the question came out of left field, he did okay (and could have done much worse).

  15. Martin says:

Good lord. I am LOL at most of the responses above. Max is the only one that has it close to being right. Contrived, inauthentic, terrible delivery of Butts script, etc. And the usual ridiculous smirk just before he started usual daily bloviating. Thank god for him he found another gig. Falling back on his acting abilities would have failed in a big way.
