Joe Biden wins the presidency

I’m back in the County, in a room that looks like a Democratic Party headquarters, and I’m feeling emotional.

So proud and happy to have supported Joe Biden.

I would really like this to be true, and I suspect it will be within the next 24 – 48 hours, but as of the time of this writing it is not confirmed from what I can tell.

And yet, still Trump tweets and litigates his defiance, lashing out at all who didn’t show him his due respect and support, including lots of Republicans. One is reminded of Cromwell’s speech to Parliament, repeated by Conservative M.P. Leo Amery at Neville Chamberlain in 1940: “You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go.”

  3. As Gleason would say: How Sweet It Is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, Mr. LockHer-Him-Them-UpTM should start daily praying for a Biden pardon once he leaves office. (He’ll need it, badly.)

From a hard right conservative I say Hallelujah and no quarter to this criminal when the office changes hands. While more people have now voted for Trump than Obama, that is hardly an endorsement for the ass-in-chief, I do hope Biden can find a way to govern for all while seeing this felonious thug is tried for treason and sent to jail. He has risked one of the world’s greatest democracies for personal gain like no other president in history.

  5. Gilbert says:

Mr. Biden is in no position to pardon anyone. Kamala Harris will be president soon.

Trump may have won on election night,
and Biden may have won 4 days after the election,
But like everything in the USA, litigation prevails and the judges will decide the outcome.

I listened to a good podcast yesterday about Trump’s chances in court. They’re really not good. First of all the SCOTUS may even refuse to hear any appeal on account of their standard position of deference to states’ rights, i.e., the fact that under the US Constitution, it’s the states who run these elections and the courts are to defer to state laws and administration of those laws.

But even if Trump got to the Supreme Court, remember that Bush v Gore was about one state, Florida. And Al Gore was behind in the count and wanted counting to continue.

Here we have a completely different set of facts, and they’re all negative for Trump. He would likely have to litigate and overturn the results in multiple states. That is an extraordinarily tall order. So, absent some earth-shattering revelation in the next few days on the vote count, I don’t like Trump’s chances.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

        Doc,

Absolutely, you don’t have to be a lawyer to understand the deference that courts generally have for the elective process. Bush was ahead — Biden is ahead — so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Courts do not upset political apple carts because they know how that in and of itself is so dangerous for democracy. They let the voters rule and that’s how it should be. I didn’t like W winning over Gore but I accepted it, given that the people had spoken, along with the explicit constitutional mechanism known as the Electoral College.

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Walter,

Don’t get your hopes up. If judges do anything, all they will do is move the Corey Lewandowskis of this world closer to the ballot counting. That’s it, period.

CNN just called it for Biden.

Interestingly, Fox News (who had called states for Biden before CNN, in recent days) is now holding back making any declarations. In related news, the Trump team apparently called Rupert Murdoch and complained about Fox News not giving Trump sufficient props. Coincidence?

    • Ronald O'Dowd says:

      Steve,

Once again Trump demonstrates for all to see that he’s nothing more than a phoney pile of Jello. He can sure dish it out, but he hasn’t got the guts to take it, especially when it comes in the form of reality-based evidence.

Fox News called election for Biden within about 15 minutes. In fact what is surprising is all networks called it close together. My understanding is they waited until Pennsylvania got above the 0.5% recount threshold. Actually there was good enough data even a day before to call election, but in US you call states, not overall and you only call it once one crosses the 270 line and since while Biden was favoured in Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Nevada and mathematical odds of losing all four was close to zero, each one individually Trump had a very small chance of still winning so they had to wait until it got to zero in one, which it did in case of Pennsylvania.

  8. Miles Lunn says:

This is great, but lets not think Biden doesn’t have a huge task ahead. 47% of Americans still voted for Orange cheeto and country is bitterly divided. However while Biden was not my first choice for Democrat nominee, I have become convinced he was the right choice. Now is about healing a divided nation, not big policy changes. And one thing about Biden is he knows how to work across aisle. No question he won’t completely solve the divides; those are so deep it will take a generation to resolve at minimum; but he can at least put the country on the road to healing.

Its also great to see first authoritarian like leader to fall. Lets hope many more be it Putin, Orban, Erdogan, Bolsonaro, Duterte etc, are next. And in many ways this also showed resiliency of US institutions as I am afraid in many democracies Trump would have never left and taken over as a dictator. But founding fathers over 200 years ago created institutions precisely to prevent a mad man like Trump from making country a dictatorship and it worked. He may whine all he wants, but constitution is clear; once electoral college votes, it is over and at Noon Washington time on January 21st, he will be required to vacate the office and if he doesn’t will be forced out.

I also think election of Kamala Harris is very historic. First women vice-president, first person of colour, and a first vice president for both African-Americans and Asian Americans. In fact both president and vice-president have now at least had one person of colour which is quite significant. And US now joins many other developed countries who have had woman leaders in having a woman in the second highest office (hopefully someday one for highest office although to be fair, Canada may have had one, but in US, they have had one win the popular vote which we have not).

So while we can celebrate defeat of Trump, Trumpism is not dead yet. But we now have four years to work on bringing in those who feel left out and are angry, which I think is a big reason for Trump’s success. Too many Americans feel forgotten and Trump spoke to their anger even if in a bad way. Biden’s promise to govern for all Americans including those who voted for Trump is the right tone rather than govern only for those who voted for them as Trump did.
