Population-level experiment: an update

We’re also about to overtake the US in first doses and quite possibly the UK on that metric as well in a few weeks. The “top 40” you reference includes every small little enclave that is in no way comparable to the vaccination of large nations. If you tease out all the little guys, Canada stacks up very well.

I don’t support Trudeau myself (the amount of money we’re spending here is insane, the internet bill is nuts, etc), but I feel like attacking him on the vaccine front is completely misguided. Every time he gets called a failure, Pfizer doubles their delivery estimates and makes everyone look like idiots. Most of us will have two doses by the end of July. It’s been very much a case of under promise and over deliver from my perspective. We’re doing really well on vaccines.

    • Tim,

Personally, I’ll go with the collective assessment of the 13 Public Health Officers and most of that will come after the fact. My opinion, your opinion, won’t cut much mustard in the balance. But people need to have made up their own minds on COVID-19 before they vote, either at the federal, provincial or territorial levels. Let each person speak and may it be heard resoundingly by the governments already in place.

It doesn’t matter if Canada eventually catches up with the U.S.. That was bound to happen eventually. If Elmer Fudd raced Donovan Bailey, yes, Elmer Fudd would eventually get to the 100 meter finish line. That doesn’t mean Elmer Fudd ran a good race. Nothing that happens in the future will make Justin’s fake vaccine plan a success. The damage caused by this government’s failures is permanent, multi-generational and historic in magnitude. Lives have been ruined, businesses destroyed, the nation is in a shambles.

    • Bill Malcolm says:

Canada hasn’t a hope of catching the UK in vaccine doses before everyone has had two shots. The UK has administered over 60 million shots, 38 million first and 22 million second. We have administered 20 million total. The difference in population is 68 million to 38 million between the UK and Canada — you do the math on percentages. They’re maintaining a steady slightly more than 500,000 new doses each day, two thirds second shots.

      https://www.bbc.com/news/health-55274833

The US has also managed to vaccinate 37.5% of its population with two doses, Canada about 4%. Sure we’ll pass them soon on first dose percentages, but the US is half full of Republicans who refuse to immunize themselves because God will show the way or some Con claptrap like that, and because they are simply confused fearful people to whom the reality as seen in the rest of the world simply does not exist for them. And they believe in Trump and stolen elections. It’s not pretty watching stupid people coming up with silly excuses.

The real global nonsense happening now is not in Canada but in all those dumb countries opening up far too early after a spot of vaccination. Despite vaccinations, the UK is under onslaught in their North West from the second Indian variant Covid strain. The US opening as in New York is just plain BS, pure and simple. Of course, with brainpower at the stupid level as demonstrated over and over again by the non-leadership in Ontario and Alberta, they’ll be opening up too early for the FOURTH time before you know it, citing such hugely influential rubbish like “Well the US is doing it, why can’t we?” I don’t know about anyone else, but just because my friend decided to jump off a cliff hasn’t made me want to do it, I just think he’s stupid.

  2. Peter Williams says:

Justin is running two population level experiments.

The first is with vaccines; one dose summer, mix and match vaccines, delay the second dose, etc.

The second is economic. He’s printing and borrowing money like crazy to keep his base happy. Bernie Madoff did essentially the same thing. Like Madoff, Justin assumes he can keep paying out money. However the fall will come.

What will Justin spend next? He gave money to set up a Porsche dealership. Mercedes dealerships anyone? Get your Justin money while you still can.

    • “He gave money to set up a Porsche dealership.”

That is a City of Ottawa decision. Nothing to do with the federal government.

      • Peter Williams says:

        Darwin

Thanks for the correction. I had thought perhaps the Porsche money was one of the 20,000 Liberal infrastructure projects the Parliamentary Budget Officer said they couldn’t find, and of which Ms McKenna won’t provide details.

        • Robert White says:

City of Ottawa subsidy is greasing the wheels for Mark Motors because that car dealership qualifies for the subsidy which Mayor Watson said is an excellent deal for the taxpayers as the plan reaps tax base windfall of half a million minimally.

Free Market Capitalism is defunct and governance has monopolized the City of Ottawa as a $2.3 billion dollar per year business. Capital Projects often include subsidy for infrastructure improvements with existing commercial sector landlords because everything is now a joint effort between business and the city managers.

Mayor Watson is an excellent manager of this corporation, but he did kind of screw up a bit on Light Rail Transit in the beginning where he launched plans with no planning on paper with the exception of the table napkin he wrote the Light Rail Transit plans on when I was running against him for city helm.

Right now Bob Chiarelli is jumping back into the race for mayor so I’m might be running against Watson & Chiarelli is this keeps up.

          Chiarelli is Mr. Dithers IMHO.

        • Peter,

Imagine that. Under Justin Trudeau? My word.

        • Ronald O'Dowd says:

          Peter,

Nothing quite like that thrilling exileration of watching Trudeau Liberal competence in government at work. That makes McKenna and the rest just barely par for the course. Exceptionally substandard in office but entirely predictable…our tax dollars hard at work in as an inept a fashion as is humanly possible. Justin, always smiling, because he’s so self-satisfied with the results. No one else is.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

            exhileration. I can’t spell…

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

But I know where everything is! LOL.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

Frankly, at this abysmal point in the Trudeau cycle, why my candidate Marc is running again is beyond me. We should be seeing flashes of what might have been Garneau leadership at work, by letting his feet do his talking for him.

    • irreversable road map to freedom says:

The Madoff / Justin comparison is very apt. Neither would have existed without supporters who either should know better or are blindly naive to reality.

  3. Yes, it is an experiment, but is a successful experiment?

Is having nearly 50% of the people with 60% immunity better at saving lives and reducing the spread then 25% of the people with 90% immunity? I dare say it is and those countries who haven’t done this may have lost more people.

The withholding of AstraZeneca has nothing to do with Trudeau.

    • Steve T says:

The proof is in the pudding, as they say. The U.S. is opening up, while Canada is still shuttered. The UK and much of Europe is also looking to re-open.

So all of the self-serving statistics and Liberal-spun fables of scientific genius get thrown out when you look at what is actually happening in other parts of the developed world. And by that measure, Canada is a disgrace.

      • Ronald O'Dowd says:

        Steve,

Too many politicians are brain dead: opening up without masks will do what it inevitably does, create sudden and huge spikes in cases. So get ready for another round of roller coaster rides.

        • Ronald O'Dowd says:

I’m still waiting for ONE moron to tell me how to tell apart the vaccinated maskless vs. the unvaccinated maskless…sheer insanity and far too premature given the number of present and emerging variants.

          • Steve Teller says:

They don’t need to worry as much about that, since a much higher percent of their population is vaccinated.

As in, the real definition of “vaccinated” – both doses. Not the made-up one-shot stat that JT and his Failure Crew like to throw around.

          • Steve,

Colour me an eternal skeptic: I’ll believe “herd immunity” when I see it. Don’t bet the farm on it.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

            Scot,

We are as one as regards COVID-19 deniers. Does this mean I should be worried Scot? LOL.

          • Warren says:

Ford’s border ads are killing them.

          • Ronald O'Dowd says:

I’ll try to find ’em on the net. Thanks.

      • The US is opening, but they have been able to aquire more vaccines then us, while Canada is mearly above average.

Like Europe, Ontario have just announced plans for re-opening.

While the case count is currently lower in the US, because a single dose it better at preventing deaths then preventing cases our death rate is still lower then the US.

  4. Phil in London says:

The failure to deliver the AZ doses and an expiry will be a god damn shame. I would consider myself a pretty blue Tory and I can speak as that here. The failure to get the doses that are sitting in Ontario pharmacies into the arms of Ontarians who are willing (and as Warren has argued are entitled under informed consent) lands squarely at the feet of one Ontario premier Doug Ford.

BC has seen the light and is using these doses. Not Doug Ford who is waiting for someone else federally to make a decision that really isn’t that hard. – offer these doses to AZ recipients that are qualified based on having had shot one 28 days s ago.

People are dying because of an incompetent leadership at both levels of government. I might be one of them. After cancer surgery in January that was “successful” we have learned this week that the cat came back. There’s a smaller tumour but while I’m waiting for my second vaccine I’m also waiting for the hospital to find a spot in the calendar to perform a rather simple procedure to hopefully minimize and quite possibly eliminate this problem. These have been one of the non-essential medical procedures delayed.

The delay is simple we are “flattening the curve” by guess work and cancelling non-priority surgery. I’m told that my cancer is a “good one” to have. I’d gladly risk a little Covid right now to my good fucking cancer being surgically removed as it can be.

Vaccinated people are a reduced risk to spreading Covid how stupid is our province’s leadership to not make a decision to allow a few hundred thousand people to jump an experimental cue in order to get them and the people they may be around better protected?
    .

    • Phil in London says:

Let me be clear I might not die because of Ford’s thumb twiddling on AZ, I might get my procedure delayed but in time. Unfortunately if not me some people will die because a vaccine ready to use and having willing recipients is going to expire like a carton of milk. Dougie himself and the fearless twits who lead the major political parties in Ottawa could all get this dose and we know it would be a better place with them around right?

      • Phil in London says:

Looks like they got my message AZ second doses as of May 24 congrats to Warren and others who have been waiting

…thought you’d take the hint when I only gave you half of the list…. yawn….also above Canada:

These are real countries Scott. Human beings live in these places. They are all doing better than Canada…. by your standards.

Tru-Anon strikes out again. Maybe stay on the bench next time, rather than walking to the plate without a bat and your pants down.

      • Martin says:

Not to mention, why would anyone BRAG about the fact we can’t keep up with undeveloped(however the hell that is defined-2 plus 2 = 5 it would appear) countries even if true. Orwell wrote a whole book on this sort of nonsense. A lot of the countries doing better than us would appear to meet whatever the bizarre nonsensical definition is of “undeveloped”. Here is the UN’s:

  6. irreversible road map to freedom says:

The Trudeau Vaccine Failure will always be denounced as a failure. Now. Ten years from now. 100 years from now. The damage is permanent and irreparable. No one is inspired by the vague possibility that Canada might one day catch up to the other basket case jurisdictions once COVID is finally over.
