I think it’s time to increase the GST to 7%. With defense obligations in a changing world, and pressures for health spending etc – I still think they should trim waste from government spending, and find efficiencies, but at the same time the government needs to increase revenue. Time to increase the GST, and I think Canadians would accept that considering the new spending obligations regarding defense, something the public supports.

    • Curious,

When do Canadians pay, along with legal entities, but only legal entities are entitled to claim it back?Either everyone gets to claim it back, or no one should be able to claim it back. Fuck this double standard, which is unjust and hypocritical.

    • Martin Dixon says:

The one per cent will love that. The party since 2015 would just continue. You need to bone up on the regressiveness of such an increase.

      • Martin Dixon says:

That was to Curious who continually votes for and advocates for things against his best interests while the one percent keep cashing their cheques. Elbows up!

With the coming austerity, the government should be careful not to impact the most vulnerable amongst us. It’s easy to cheer it on from afar when programs are cut, but when you know the people being affected its much harder to swallow and accept. I’m probably further to the left than most posters here, although a centrist for the most part, but I can’t stomach a government that doesn’t care about, and act on the suffering and plight of defenseless vulnerable Canadians. It’s a deal breaker for me, and i immediately lose respect for said politician when they attack defenseless people to save a couple bucks – all the while blabbing about tax cuts we cant afford (cutting taxes doesn’t raise tax revenue, no matter how often you lie about it).

  3. Curious V says:

I’ve always felt it was irresponsible of Harper to cut the GST – the old Conservative trick of cutting taxes, claiming it will increase revenue, and then being stuck with a deficit and pending cuts to services.

  4. Warren,

Last week’s KinsellaCast can be heard as background noise while this week’s is playing.

  5. Warren,

Sorry, me stupid sometimes. Don’t know how I managed to do this. My apologies.

  6. Warren,

I remain HardLineRonTM. The only thing Trump understands is strength, and that means hitting the Americans as hard as possible and as often as possible. Period. Ford has got it right, but he’s a dove next to me. LOL.

  7. Warren,

Nope. Trump, who happens to agree with every line of Project 2025, is not walking but running away from it, given that it’s toxic to more than a majority of Americans.

My sense of it is that there was rightly a revolt in PMO basically asking Carney if he’s crazy given the political optics that would flow from such a meeting. Carney backed down when they explained to him that this would go a long way to revive the NDP and fast.

  8. Warren,

    Mark Carney, our TouristPrimeMinisterTM…

  9. Warren,

PLEASE, the 5% thing is bullshit, a complete waste of time and money. Trump is AGAINST NATO and still in Putin’s pocket thanks to blackmail. So, if Putin ever goes across NATO borders, Trump will do dick to come to the rescue of those NATO members affected by the Russian invasion.

  10. Once Trump is out or, preferably, dead from natural causes, then we can talk about a serious 5% defence commitment. Until then, forget it.

  11. Gilbert says:

Increasing the GST will punish those who can least afford the to pay more. People are already taxed too much. The stupidity with the GST is that people see the price before and after tax. Who needs to be reminded how much the tax is every time? It decreases government revenue, but helps to reduce tax evasion and the underground economy, and it keeps more money in people’s pockets.

    • Curious v says:

Bullshit – people who can’t afford it get rebates. We need the revenue- taxes are necessary to have a civilized country. Ridiculous this attack on taxes when without them we wouldn’t have healthcare, education, a military etc – we need a tax base to be a civilized country.

      • Martin Dixon says:

Keep telling yourself that the reabates make up for the fact that an increase to a regressive tax like the HST is not music to the ears of the 1%. Please, keep telling yourself that. And given that our gdp per capita is not growing, it is a zero sum game so if the 1% benefits, guess who doesn’t. Elbows up!

  12. Warren,

These polls are all over the place. I can’t figure out why there is such a divergence, post Angus Reid???

    Abacus: Liberals +3;

    Mainstreet: Liberals +2.

The NDP is up and down like a yoyo. Makes absolutely no sense. The CPC and LPC can’t both be bleeding to the NDP and in the next poll not…screwy beyond belief.

    • Douglas+W says:

Polls with less than 1,500 respondents and I shrug

    • Martin Dixon says:

I remain convinced we will settle in at 41%. Just posted something about Bittle and I see St Catherine’s only went 6% for the NDP. That will NEVER happen again. There are crazy results like that all over the country. Wait until the austerity cuts start while Carney doles out money to big businesses to rejig the economy. Inflation will ramp up. The shift to the 1% will accelerate(thanks Mark!) and we will be back to the usual programming.

  13. EsterHazyWasALoser says:

I agree with Warren completely on his analysis of John Tory. I have never understood his attraction amongst the voters; given two choices he inevitably will pick the wrong one. His adultery was completely inexcusable, and because of his selfish decision Torontonians went from having a mediocre mayor to having one that is incompetent and dangerous. I am flabbergasted that anyone would even consider supporting him in another run.

  14. Martin Dixon says:

This Liberal caucus is so cute if they think Carney will actually tell them what is going on. From Politico:

“Bittle, who was first elected in 2015, said Liberal MPs will arrive at this week’s strategy sessions keen to hear the latest. “There will be a dramatic thirst from caucus, as there is for Canadians — like, ‘Tell us what’s going on!’”
But Bittle said it could be tricky terrain for a PM who genuinely seems “EAGER TO BRING IN HIS CAUCUS MORE THAN HIS PREDECESSOR” — Trudeau, that is.
“I hope there’s an understanding in caucus that some of the cards can’t be revealed,” Bittle said. “But fundamentally that will be the No. 1 issue.””

The quote in caps is particularly hilarious. And keeping up on caucus gossip is the number one issue?

  15. Martin Dixon says:

Over/under on Carney approving the merger of Teck and Agnico? The question was redundant. Despite the fact that we are supposed to be working on controlling our own destiny, Teck will now be foreign owned. But, hey, I am fine with it. I own a bunch. Elbows up!

Harper stopped a similar large merger between BHP and Potash in 2010 but I digress. I actually wanted that one to go through but, like now, the conservatives were not in bed with the 1%. The left is so cute!

  16. Warren,

All of Quebec is abuzz with rumours of an early election. Legault, the pretend non-sovereignist will willingly go down the drain to make sure that the sovereignist cousins get to form government. Legault wins both ways: he get to see Quebec go on a sovereignist path and he fucks Pablo but good. If the CAQ refuses to stomach this, they will have to get rid of him pronto, if they can. Otherwise…

  17. Warren,

Common Sense has descended on my political enemies. The emails have finally stopped, but since I’m less forgiving than our Lord or Jesus, I will continue with gusto. He’s definitely earned it.

  18. Warren,

The longstanding poll pattern has returned:

    Léger: Liberals +9;

    Nanos: Liberals +10;

No wonder fifty percent of Canadians say they don’t expect PP to become prime minister. They’re onto something there.

    • Gilbert says:

I’d like to know what the question was. ‘Do you agree Pierre Poilievre will never become Prime Minister?” and “Do you agree Pierre Poilievre could become Prime Minister?” are different questions and would produce different results.

      • Gilbert,

You can choose from the following:

        Angus Reid:

“New data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute suggests that Poilievre still holds the support of most Conservative voters (68%) but the group of voters who could have made the difference between defeat and governing the country want a new leader. A majority (54%) of Canadians who considered voting Conservative during the campaign but ultimately decided against it want Poilievre to be voted out in January.”

“Poilievre led the party to its strongest electoral showing in more than four decades in April but did so while being viewed negatively by most Canadians (a fact perhaps acknowledged by the party when it dropped him from campaign ads aired during the final week of the election). While he is viewed by Canadians as a strong critic of the current government (73% say this), half believe him to be insincere (52%) and say they would be ashamed to call him the prime minister (50%). Both of those latter measures have increased compared to data taken by ARI in December 2023 (45%, 40% respectively).”

        Léger:

“Satisfaction with the Carney government stands at 51%, representing a three-point drop since the last measurement. Notably, the share of Canadians who say they are very dissatisfied with the government has increased by three points, reaching 21% in September. Similarly, the Carney government’s approval rate has also declined, dropping from 56% in August to 53% in September.”

“Still, one in two Canadians (50%) believe Pierre Poilievre’s chances of winning the next election against Mark Carney are poor, while 14% are unsure. Just over one-third of Canadians (36%) think Poilievre could defeat Carney in a future election. This proportion rises to 72% among Conservative voters.”

        Ipsos:

“Six In Ten Canadians (58%) Approve of the Liberal Government’s Performance Under Pm Carney”

        https://www.ipsos.com/en-ca/six-ten-canadians-approve-liberal-governments-performance-under-pm-carney

      • Gilbert,

Two-thirds of Conservative members and supporters are gullible fools. They will back the leader in January and then lose the spring election. Just one more in a series of election losses. The next election loss will be the FIFTH in a row. But that’s OK because this party loves losing!

  19. Warren,

Caught Pierre on CBC News Network. That in and of itself was a long overdue positive. Agree with his message about protecting party leaders and their families. It should NOT be optional.

Here in Quebec, Pablo is now automatically protected by the Sûreté du Québec since becoming PLQ leader.

  20. Martin Dixon says:

I note with more than a little amusement that the Dow hit 46,000 this week. When the Dow was tanking, all the usual suspects said that was proof of T’’s incompetence. Now what? Perhaps Paul Krugman should weigh in. Said we would never ever see 18,000 again in 2016 after T was elected. Economists are so cute!

    • Martin,

It’s a bubble top. In fact, the ultimate bubble. Just wait until Trump the moron forces Powell’s hand to cut interest rates. The markets will tank, with gold and silver exploding exponentially higher. Trump is well on his way to destroying the purchasing power of the dollar. That means stagflation and a likely recession. It’s coming as sure as my name is Ron.

As for economists, their only worthwhile prediction is the one that almost certainly will be wrong…they’re a group of know-nothings. They would fit in perfectly in the Liberal Party.
