I’d like to get rid of the notwithstanding clause – too easy for radicals to usurp the rights of minorities. And, the supreme court is the final straw when governments overstep their authority. Keep it that way. Look at Danielle smith about to use the notwithstanding clause to supersede good medical advice, and charter rights for trans kids – how cruel. Saskatchewan too with Moe.

    • Curious,

You’re out in LaLaLandTM. Trudeau GAVE US the NWC to get agreement on his odious, hypocritical, and self-serving constitution. In short, he sold out to the premiers. Do you really think that these same baronial fiefdoms are about to give up their leg up against Ottawa? Not in a month of Sundays. If you want to cast blame, then simply look in the mirror and slowly repeat the name Pierre Elliott Trudeau, a man I proudly despised from Day One. An arrogant, full-of-himself bastard. How I miss LaMarsh who also pegged the guy from the get-go.

    • The Doctor says:

Good luck with that. After all, amending our Constitution is so easy peasy. I mean, look at what happened last time we tried . . .

    • EsterHazyWasALoser says:

You’re not too big on democracy are you, Mr (I Am) Curious V? The Not Withstanding Clause is the only safeguard we have against a tyrannical federal government. Isn’t it ironic on the pearl clutching we get from the left when it comes to an overbearing right-wing government, but when its the “Progressives” in power, any and all type of government coercion is just fine.

      • Curious v says:

We don’t use the notwithstanding clause because we believe in protections for people, that minorities and citizens in general are protected from
Radical governments – like pp would be should he ever win (won’t happen)

        • The Doctor says:

Yes, so much better to be ruled by a bunch of unelected people right? That’s what judges are in Canada.

One of my university classmates noted the irony of this in Canada among large swaths of the liberal-left intellectual class: this blind faith that they put in a bunch of unelected (supposedly) enlightened despots, on the presumption that most judges are part of Team Proggie. It’s so utterly unprincipled.

I always liked the notwithstanding clause. I think its a bit of uniquely Canadian legal genius. It acknowledges that the Charter isn’t perfect in all situations… especially situations the writers couldn’t possibly have imagined and those moments are upon us now.

Listened to the start of the Roadrunner track and thinking “I haven’t heard that version”. Excuse to spin it:

    Enjoyed the Secrets of Immortality.

I am still in favour of free speech but, generally speaking, the last guy that that was able to resist the tendency to think turnabout is fair play was nailed to the cross. I could not believe how quickly Stockwell Day was cancelled(among others).

    Trigger warning in effect:

The world, like I’ve warned in previous posts, is being overtaken by fascists. They’re back, and we can see their cooky bullshit at the provincial level – it’s all hands on deck to beat back fascism lest we fall victim to their bullshit. They only respond to power – the teachers in Alberta have a powerful union. They’ve been offered a 12 percent raise due to said union. Nurses get a raise, doctors too – and tax breaks for big business. They’re all powerful lobbies. Now look at the most vulnerable citizens in Alberta – they aren’t organized, and they aren’t powerful – they’re certainly a minority group. The disabled community – the province is withholding a $200 federal benefit, they’re raising rent $200, and they’re cutting the benefit (AISH) by $200. That’s a six hundred dollar rip off from the weakest and most vulnerable people in the province. Even disabled people who work are being targeted, with a benefit claw back at $350 in earnings, preventing the disabled community from even working their way out of poverty – they go after minorities, disabled – people who have less power are targeted. They’ve also cut off covid vaccines, and the flu shot!!!!! Look at the brutally ignorant and stupid actions of a government that more closely resembles the MAGA crowd than any other in Canada. Maple syrup MAGA please do something to better yourselves so we don’t have to suffer your bullshit!!

    • Curious,

Too many in AB just don’t give a shit. They’re all in for the UCP with no reservations, conditions, or much opposition. Brainwashed and ever-compliant trained seals. In this country we get the government we deserve. Well, in AB, this is just a small start to what they deserve. I hope they enjoy it while they keep giving the dolt premier a sustained and never-ending pass. And those same people are largely rock-solid for PP. I rest my case…

      • Curious v says:

I think she’s going to lose the next election. The NDP has a very strong leader and they’re offending too many right of centre pc’s who aren’t entirely on board with her wildrose shit show – lets just hope for the best. It would be easier to dethrone them if the NDP would change their name to attract centre and centre right voters – smith only appeals to radicals in her party –

    • EsterHazyWasALoser says:

If everybody is a “Fascist”, then nobody is. Using that slander should be a hate crime – you’re all in on big gov, right V?

  4. Warren,

It’s impossible to tell if you are more loyal to your blood or friends. If only most people had that same stellar and unconditional quality.

  5. Warren,

The old bastard is holding on to the podium for dear life as he spews his hateful and ridiculous nonsense. God, how I hope he drops dead ASAP. After all, that’s what he so richly deserves. He’s already earned his place in hell.

  6. Poor Ben, such a babe in the woods. Translation: told you’re out of cabinet and you can either take the consolation prize or get nothing. See how easy that was!

  7. Warren,

To me this is big picture stuff: sure, Kimmel had no clue as to the alleged shooter’s identity when he made his opening statement. But who cares either way? It’s kind of inside baseball and relatively meaningless. Point being that the whole thing is part of the Trump grand orchestration to deep-six anyone who opposes him or his deeds, whether the guy’s name is Kimmel, Colbert, or anything else. Trump, the dictator with seemingly absolute power at work. Shame on Congress, the SCOTUS, and most of all, media conglomerates who don’t want their deals blocked.

    • ESterHazyWasALoser says:

Kimmel was thrown overboard because the network affiliates were under pressure from their viewers to do something. His comments were asinine and highly inappropriate, to say the least. A young man was the victim of a hideous murder, and Kimmel thinks that he should be able to joke about that before the body is even cold. Why would anybody find that objectionable? With respect to free speech, there is nothing stopping Jimmy from starting his own TV network and propagating his offensive nonsense. The left, when in power engages in all sorts of censorship, especially here in Canada. Just ask Jordan Peterson or Amy Hamm. As I like to say, it’s a long road without a curve.

      • Martin Dixon says:

Don Cherry, Stockwell Day, Rex Murphy, Lyndsay Shepherd(everyone should read her book).

        https://www.amazon.ca/Diversity-Exclusion-Confronting-Campus-Speech/dp/099391957X

I had a friend on the WLU Board Of Governors at this time and he could not even speak his mind on the issue. They generally let one fly-over country member from Brantford on the Board because of the Brantford campus and it is ALWAYS an eye opting experience. I would last 10 seconds.

        • The Doctor says:

So your principled answer is: the other guys have done bad stuff, so my team should be allowed to do bad stuff in return and not be criticized for doing said bad stuff.

          • Martin Dixon says:

Was that directed at me? Look up a few posts:. I never said it was a principled answer.

“I am still in favour of free speech but, generally speaking, the last guy that that was able to resist the tendency to think turnabout is fair play was nailed to the cross. I could not believe how quickly Stockwell Day was cancelled(among others).”

Not to mention that Kimmel is back on the air so this whole Goebbels like enterprise doesn’t seem to be going as planned. The 400 douche-bags that signed that letter have been cancelling conservatives in Hollywood for years. They can spare me with their hypocrisy.

      • Martin Dixon says:

        Kimmel back on the air.

        • Gilbert says:

I don’t watch his show, but clearly, he has his supporters.

          • Martin Dixon says:

I started to watch Colbert because he was pretty funny in his previous iterations. He eventually just became a way to get the daily DNC talking points. Nothing wrong with that. One should get them from somewhere. Not sure what I will do now because if I have to listen to them, I need a dose of humour so CNN and MSNBC are out.

      • Martin Dixon says:

All the folks mentioned in this thread needed 400 Hollywood douche-bags to back them up. To flip on its head our host’s statement that he used to think conservatives were in favour of free speech but no longer, this is certainly not proof that said douche-bags are in favour of free speech because where were they whenever everyone else got cancelled.

These guys cover the douche-baggery by the ACLU and the 400 beautiful people pretty well with some fairly colourful language.

  8. Warren,

I don’t waste my time denouncing the right or the left on free speech. We’re ALL hypocrites: we love free speech when it calls out our tune and loathe it when it favors our enemies’ tune.

    • Martin Dixon says:

I actually prefer when it is done with a heavy hand out in the open(the FCC has always been a political outfit). It can be dealt with much easier than when those 400 douche-bags don’t give conservatives work and can’t be touched. Joe McCarthy would be proud.

  9. Warren,

I’m changing my tune on Abacus and Angus Reid. Large sample sizes that confirm preceding polls. The latest poll speaks of a tie, while the two previous had the Conservatives up 2%.

    • Martin Dixon says:

I maintain we will keep our 40% which normally wins elections. I doubt the country will be gripped in another Elbows Up insane fever again. I saw someplace that even some of the baby boomers are having second thoughts. Perhaps the fever broke.

  10. Warren,

Maybe just maybe Carney should have listened to the illegally recorded tape before expressing full confidence in his Minister? You think?

  11. Pierre may be on the right track for once. Nice change.

  12. Martin Dixon says:

After the last couple of days, I am surprised that there are no Gary Anandasangaree/Head of lettuce memes floating around. Carney says he is doing “important” work. Over/under on him landing a gig at BAM when his political days are over.

  13. Martin,

I find his personal honesty refreshing but it’s a No-No when you’re part of the ministerial trained seal brigade. A PM can live with offering a potential top up of a turn-in price but to offer to theoretically bail out someone under the laws and regulations of your own Department — now THAT’S really a bridge too far for any minister. Carney should already know that but so far apparently not. Not a good look for Carney, not one bit.

  14. Martin Dixon says:

Carney increasing his carbon footprint again today. Didn’t they learn anything about that new technology called Zoom at Brookfield that got popular during the plague?

  15. Martin Dixon says:

Given the various headlines of late, it looks like Vince Gasparro ran for the wrong party.
