Hudak and choice

As a number of prominent Canadians just highlighted in a press conference, Tim Hudak wants to defund abortion.  Full stop.

If questioned – and he will make it very hard for any reporter to question him on abortion today, believe me – Hudak will say it isn’t a priority for him.  But he’s never renounced his promise to defund abortion.

Whether you are pro-choice or pro-life, you deserve to know where the leaders stand on this issue.  By vacillating, by dodging microphones, Hudak should be condemned by both sides.  Both sides – and there are good people on both sides of the issue – deserve to hear Hudak finally say where he stands.

Here and here and here and here and here is some of the commentary on this issue, over the past few months.

And here is Hudak’s position, in black and white, which has never changed:

I am pro-life. I would be surprised if any pro-lifers think that he is going to advance the cause in any way. He has basically turned his back on the issue. Can’t imagine him finding a backbone if were somehow elected

I eschew the pro life/pro choice dichotomy but consider myself pragmatically anti abortion. I understand how people who consider themselves pro choice would abhor any decision to defund abortion, even though their arguements are only partially consistent with my views. I wish abortions to be safe, if not promoted, though please explain to me what is unjustifiable about encouraging women to carry pregnancies and give infants up to adoption, especially when the alternative is essentially killing it?

To clarify, my views are independant and seperate from those of conservatives and the religious right, my oppositions to abortion are on what I consider progressive, pragmatic grounds. Tim Hudak is a racist, homophobic, waffling, weasely man and I hope he goes down in a ball of flames.

I think you’re going to like the Ipsos just released.

I did, thank you very much. I’ve been predicting a Liberal minority for most of the campaign, but it seems that a third majority is clearly in the sights. It was the pamphlet, wasn’t it?

  3. BobbyB says:

I am pro-life as well, although in Harper’s case I can be persuaded to look the other way!

Your cause will go nowhere unless you and like minds divorce your opposition to abortion from that of the conservative and religious establishment. It’s why I believe the debate on this issue has been stuck in a rut since before I was born.
